FORTY YEARS OF AQUALUNG: AN INTERVIEW
WITH JETHRO TULL’S MARTIN BARRE

By Jeb Wright. For over 42 years members of Jethro Tull have come and gone like a revolving door. Only bandleader Ian Anderson has been with the band for every album. After Tull’s debut, This Was, Anderson made the first of many sackings in his band, guitarist Mick Abrahams had to go. The pair were butting heads over the direction Jethro Tull should pursue, with Abrahams pushing for a more guitar oriented blues approach. Anderson had other visions and, in the end, he remained.
Martin Barre was recruited to replace Abrahams as the band went into the studio to work on their second album, Stand Up, which sowed the seeds of what would become the classic mix of flute and guitar that became the Jethro Tull sound. Barre fit in well and began to contribute more on Tull’s third release, Benefit, as the band began to experience commercial success around the globe.
It was the next album, however, Aqualung, that broke the band huge and enabled them to be one of the most successful and unique, bands in the rock genre. Songs like “Aqualung,” “Cross Eyed Mary,” “Locomotive Breath” and “Hymm 43” rocked harder than Tull had ever rocked. The team of Anderson/Barre matured. Over the years, band members were cast aside, seemingly at Anderson’s whim, only Barre would remain.
Now, over four decades later, the classic Aqualung album has turned 40 years old. To celebrate that fact, EMI has released a two-disc version of the album with a bonus disc of other recordings made at the same time, as well as a deluxe version for the hardcore Tull fan, which includes a the CDS, a vinyl version of the album and a book.
Martin met with Classic Rock Revisited to discuss the making of the album. He revealed the difficulty the band had recording the album and the creative process behind the songs. During the interview, however, Barre shocked us by revealing that there are no plans for anymore Jethro Tull albums or tours at this time. When asked if the band was no more Barre could only say, “I don’t know.”
While the future of Jethro Tull with both Ian Anderson and Martin Barre in the band is up in the air, Barre is not staying at home and watching morning talk shows. He has assembled a band to tour Europe and play his solo music. He is also working on a worldwide tour with another band he is putting together that will play only Jethro Tull music. Barre promises that many of the songs performed will be tunes that have not been performed by Tull in many, many years. Ian Anderson has announced he will also do a solo tour performing the classic Thick as a Brick in its entirety.
While the future of Tull may be up in the air, the past is firmly cemented in solid bedrock. Read on to learn about the classic Aqualung and learn where the guitarist is headed in 2012.

Jeb: It’s hard to believe Aqualung is 40 years old. You’re used to anniversaries but the number 40 really jumps out at you. Martin: These numbers come up and they’re like birthdays. When you have your 40^th birthday it’s like, ‘WHOA!” Then 50 is a big one and 60 is a big one but after that is 65, which is huge. I would imagine that after that you just go to 66 and then 67, as each one gets bigger the older you get; each day becomes an anniversary as you’re just happy to be alive.
The thrill of the album’s anniversary dulls a bit because after this year will be the 40^th anniversary of Thick as a Brick, and the following year, Passion Play. I’m very proud but I have trouble getting too excited.
Jeb: When the big 10’s come up, like 40 years, it does give the fans a chance to look back and remember why that album was so special to them. Martin: The packages are very nicely put together and they’re great for the fans. Jethro Tull has never patted ourselves on the back, ever. We’ve never gone down to the pub and said, “It’s been forty years; pour me a glass of champagne.”
It’s a shame because we’re living in an age where everything is expendable. We don’t have a record company anymore. EMI deal with the back catalog but I’ve never talked to them. It is all very removed from the days when you would go to the record company in New York, or LA, and you would go to the office and know everybody. You would leave the building with armfuls of everybody else’s records. It was very personalized then but now, most of the record companies I deal with have gone bankrupt. They just don’t exist anymore. If they do, then they don’t have any money. There is not a lot of celebrating anymore. For me, the celebrating I do is when I walk into the studio, pick up my guitar and play something and think, “Yeah, that’s nice.”
I am proud of the albums and the history and it does mean a lot, however, it is what I’m doing today and what I’m going to do tomorrow that is really important for me.
Jeb: Jethro Tull is one band that has never worried about sales, style, what is in vogue or anything else; Tull makes the music the most important thing. You have a fan base that will accept whatever Tull does, not that they always like it, but they give it a fair listen. Martin: They are amazing and we’ve made them put up with some weird stuff over the years. They patiently sat through it. I guess because of them, we have license to change directions, which is great. If you don’t do that, you get so bogged down in a style that it gets hard to survive. Luckily, Ian and I both love writing music. I am writing music now. Sometimes, in the back of your mind you wonder, “Have I lost it?” I then play and play and play until I go, “Yeah, I did it; I’ve still got it.” I just love that. While I like it, that is still not what matters most, as you’ve got to get a few thousand other people to like it as well. Jethro Tull’s fans have given us the opportunity to do a lot of stuff. They allow us to do solo projects and to play with other people. We are able to take the music to a lot of places that fans of other bands may not have allowed them to take it; it’s great.
Jeb: Ian Anderson and Martin Barre have been the two members of Tull since the second album when you joined. To my ear, Aqualung has more and more of your guitar. The electric songs “Cross Eyed Mary,” “Aqualung” and “Hymm 43” really seem to show you getting more involved with the songs than the two albums you were previously on, Benefit and Stand Up.” Martin: On Stand Up, I was terrified because I had just joined the band. It really showed a change in direction for the band and when it was accepted and became a successful album, we gained a lot of confidence. We extended that confidence into the making of Benefit, in which we were a lot more at ease. Ian was still writing the songs on guitar at the time.
When Aqualung came out, Ian would show me what he had written and then we would play it. His flute playing was very much in proportion with the guitar. Obviously, I’m biased but when you jump forward 40 years things have changed.
Jethro Tull did their last show for quite a while in July. I have started playing my solo material again and I’ve got a few projects I am working on. The amazing thing is that I’ve started playing half of my material and half of this French guy’s material; I have so much to do in this project. I love arranging music and playing with great musicians. I like saying, ‘Try this” and they say, “Try that?” I tell them to just try it and they go, “Wow.” To me, when it works out then that is the greatest thing about writing and arranging music; it is the icing on the cake. I have been having a lot of fun.
I suddenly realized how little guitar I was playing in Jethro Tull and how little I had to do. I was taking a bit of a backseat, which is never a good thing. I was not having to work very hard, and I like to work hard.

Jeb: On Aqualung, were you sharing ideas with Ian or was he very much the conductor? Martin: He was driving but I was in the front seat of the same car. We all had ideas and everybody listened to each other’s thoughts on the songs. Everybody had input into the making of the album. It hasn’t always been that way, but in the early days it was that way. We tried to find ways to play the music and to interrupt what Jethro Tull was, not one person could do that. We tried to make Jethro Tull take a specific direction. Ian had a lot to do with it but we all had important roles to play. Over the years, that got diluted and certain concepts took over. Keyboards became too important, or electronic drums became too important. Over the years, the computer has become too important. These things diluted the Jethro Tull sound, which is really made up of flute and guitar songs. It disappeared because we got bogged down by looking at a bloody computer screen. I hate it but you have to do it.
I refuse to record like that. I play live in the studio. I can’t deal with people saying, “I can fix that.” You sit there for twenty minutes while he looks at a computer screen. In that time, you could have done it again and instead you’re watching a screen. That is not making music, as the essential thing, when you do a performance on an instrument, are the imperfections. All of the grunts and farts are lost. If you lose those elements then you sterilize the music.
Jeb: I have to ask you, because this is Aqualung’s 40^th, about playing those big opening notes to the title track. Martin: Ian wrote that riff and I wrote the guitar solo. In those days, the riff was often the main part of the song like “Aqualung” or “Cross Eyed Mary.” Ian wrote those riffs and they would be the basis of the song. It made it very much Jethro Tull and the songs and guitar riff were very important to the sound.
I once did a solo tour, and I used a guitar player, whose name I’m not going to mention, and when he played “My God” he would bend one of the notes sharp in the riff and I about died because that riff didn’t need interpreting because it is what it is. It is really simple and it worked. Why did it work? Because it was simple and that is the hard thing when playing live. You record it and it is something that is simple and works but you’ve got to hold on to that when you recreate it. I’ve got to make sure that when I play, I play it correctly. When somebody else plays these riffs, to me, it just doesn’t sound the same. It could be a virtuoso but it won’t sound the same. I have worked with some fantastic musicians but they all share the same inability to play simple. Jimi Hendrix could play one note and you would know immediately who it was.

Jeb: The solo on “Aqualung,” did you do that in parts or did you wing it? Martin: I winged it. I remember a long time ago meeting somebody in the dressing room and they were playing all of the solos from “Nothing is Easy.” Over the years, I had changed it a bit, as you do. Hearing him play it I realized that it didn’t need changing. The way it was on the record was fine. It was not great and it was not Steve Vai or Joe Satriani, but it was the way that it ought to be.
Jeb: You talked about simplicity and that brings me to “Hymm 43” and the part where you scratch the pick on the strings while your fret hand mutes the strings. You also do that on “Locomotive Breath.” You didn’t invent that technique but like all things Tull you placed it in the song perfectly. Martin: Just last week I was playing “Locomotive Breath” and the other guitar player improvised and he played the riff differently and I was thinking, “No, that’s not it.” I was onstage so I couldn’t tell him how it should be. He was doing it the way he heard it but it was not the way that it was supposed to be.
Jethro Tull was a very isolated band; we didn’t mix with other bands. We didn’t copy things because we didn’t listen to their music. Some of the ideas were fresh because there were really no influences at all.
Jeb: Ian has said that the studio was difficult to work in because it was a converted church. You were the first band to record in that studio. Martin: The gear kept breaking down and we would have to sit there for hours while they fixed it, which was very frustrating. It was a very hard and stressful album to make. We didn’t just plug in and the magic happened; it was very hard work. It was very difficult to get all of the backing tracks done. It ended up being a very important album. Another Jethro Tull album, Under Wraps, fell into place very quickly but it is probably the least important album we ever made. There is no telling what’s going to happen.
I remember reading about when the Beatles made Abbey Road. They were arguing all the time and they had many problems recording the album. It has great songs on it and was a wonderful album but it was very hard for them to make.
Jeb: Led Zeppelin came in to the same studio to record IV while Tull was recording Aqualung. Have you ever thought back that on the same spot on the earth two incredible albums that changed rock music forever were being recorded at the same time?Martin: The atmosphere in that studio was terrible. It was an old church; it was not some amazing studio in LA or New York. We were isolated in the studio from Led Zeppelin. We only even ran into them once, and that was in the kitchen. We had absolutely no connection with them and I don’t even know if they had an easy time making their album or not. The atmosphere we were under was not good. We never went, “Let’s go over and see what Led Zeppelin are doing” because we were all working very hard trying to get our album recorded. It was really hard work.
Jeb: When the album was done did you have any thoughts that this album would become as huge as it did? Martin: Not at all. I think it was really a snowball that was rolling down a hill in those days. We would go out and tour, then do Madison Square Garden and get presented with a Gold disc and then keep on touring. It was endless. We never got over the top in our behavior because we were working so hard. We never entered the ‘rock star’ world. We never had time to sit back and say, “That was great.” We were expected to continue being great and make another great album. We never sat on our laurels, ever.
Jeb: Tell me about the solo dates you are going to be doing and if there are plans for any solo releases. Martin: The idea is to do a compilation of acoustic versions of Tull songs. I would like to do some of the very melodic, acoustic songs from Tull that rarely get noticed. I am writing new music with my solo band and it will be part of it as well. I would like to include a compilation from my first solo album and include some tracks that got buried when they were first released. I am working on a book and I would love to make an album and give it away as a freebie with it.
I have lots of music and a lot of good ideas and I am going to have the time to do something with them. Jethro Tull is on ice for the foreseeable future, as Ian is doing a solo tour. I am trying to plan my life and project forward for the next couple of years. I am doing a solo tour in Europe and England where I will play a compilation of my music. Next up, I have a project that I want to bring everywhere. This will be a band setting but I can’t yet mention names of who will be in the band. We will be playing purely Jethro Tull material.
Jeb: Will these be different versions of Tull songs? Martin: No, it is going to be pure Tull. I want to get back to the simplicity of the early songs that we haven’t done for a long time. There will be no keyboards. It will be straightforward and we will be playing tracks that have not been played for many, many years.
Jeb: This sounds exciting. May I recommend you play “To Cry You a Song”?Martin: Don’t worry, because that song will be played.
Jeb: Did you discuss this tour with Ian? Is he okay with you doing this? Martin: We’re very separate in what we are doing at this time. There is really no need to discuss it because I know what I want to do and I’m going to do it; that’s the end of it. I’m not going to change it because of what anybody says. I just know what I need to do and I’m very determined, and very focused, to make what I want to do happen.
Jeb: I thought the next Jethro Tull tour would see the band playing Thick as a Brick in its entirety. Martin: Ian will be doing that; it will not be me.
Jeb: Tull really is taking some time off. I guess that has been a long time coming. Martin: It has been a long time. It has happened and I’ve had to adapt. It might be a disappointment to some. You’ve just got to turn that disappointment around and make it something positive. Since that is not going to happen, then I will make this happen and I will make this more important.
Jeb: Are saying Jethro Tull is over or just taking a break? Martin: I don’t know. The music of Tull is my life. I have not only the right to play it but also the will and passion to play it—a passion play, if you will. It is very natural for me to do what I’m going to do.
There is no question that I know my part in the history of Jethro Tull and that means something to me. It is very, very important to me. It might not be to everybody, as there are those who don’t even know who I am when I’m onstage, but to me, it is a huge place in my life. I have 42 and a half years invested in the music of Jethro Tull and I can’t simply turn that off. I don’t want to quit. I don’t care what anybody else thinks of me, right now, this is me, this is my heritage and this is what I want to do and I’m going to do it.
Jeb: Don’t feel too badly Martin, a lot of people think Jethro Tull is the guy onstage. Martin: They really do. The image for Jethro Tull really is the guy on one leg. The silhouette is the image and it is a very good image. It has never been a problem in my mind because that image is vital to promoting the band.
Jeb: Anyone that is worth their salt as a Jethro Tull fan knows who Martin Barre is and you’re very important to the fans view of the music. Martin: The thing that is going to happen is that there are going to be two tribute bands on the road; Ian’s solo band and mine. We will not be playing the same music. I don’t think it will be a problem because Ian wants to sing less and play more. I want to go back to the roots and recreate the atmosphere of the early to mid 1970’s and that style of live band. Tull was an exciting live band back then with lots of energy. There was a lot of technique and power and that is what I want to do. Ian and I are not going after the same thing.
Jeb: Last one: I guess I will have to wait for the day to see you and Ian do a flute battle on stage because you will not be in the same band. Martin: I’ve started to play the flute again. I don’t play enough to be a good flute player but I did play the flute even before I met Ian.
My band that will do the Tull music includes an incredible flute player. He’s an absolute virtuoso in the Irish style of flute playing. I think people will really enjoy it. As far as the music of Jethro Tull goes, I can play that. I think I will be able to get away with it. It’s not a token gesture and it’s relevant because I have played flute on stage and I’ve played flute on albums. It is not a cheesy thing of someone doing something they shouldn’t be doing. "THIS IS ROCK" (NUMERO DE SEPTIEMBRE) ENTREVISTA A MARTIN BARRE.
La revista mensual dedicada al mundo del rock, en su número de septiembre, recien salido a la calle, publica una amplia entrevista (8 paginas) a Martin Barre, guitarrista de Jethro Tull, conmemorando el 40 aniversario de la grabación del album "Aqualung", y su inminente salida en formato deluxe. Pero no se acaba ahí la conexión de la revista con nuestra banda favorita. Tambien incluye un largo dossier sobre el reciente festival High Voltage donde, entre otros, actuaron Jethro Tull (en el escenario Prog Rock). Y, además, como colofon, dedican casi una página a la última convención de Tullianos, que tuvo lugar en Gavá el pasado 9 de julio, y que tuvo como invitado (muy) especial al mismísimo Ian Anderson.
Casi toda la entrevista a Martin Barre gira en torno a la grabación del disco Aqualung, y a las diferentes guitarras y amplificadores que usó el guitarrista en él, pero deja comentarios como "la banda ya no es la que era".
A la pregunta del periodista de por qué cree que ha permanecido tanto tiempo en la banda, Barre contesta:
"Me gusta recordar cosas, y esa es la razón por la que conseguí el puesto, porque me acuerdo de todos los acordes de cada canción de cada album. No se deshacen de mí porque nadie más se conoce los acordes de Passion Play. Me tendrían que llamar por teléfono, y yo diría "lo siento", así que conservo el trabajo". Curioso, ¿bromeaba?.
Y sobre la actualidad de la banda: "Hay cosas que Ian quiere hacer y yo no. Hay cosas que quiero hacer yo para las que no necesito a nadie.Las cosas han cambiado, Ian sale por ahí con una banda diferente y no importa si se llama Jethro Tull o Ian Anderson porque, basicamente, se trata de Ian tocando música de Jethro Tull, de modo que lo que se percibe es Jethro Tull. Pero está bien, porque son cosas que yo no quiero hacer. Igual van a la Rusia profunda y yo no quiero ir allí. La última vez que fuí a Moscú me atracaron y no quiero volver; no es más que un agujero de mierda. Es cuestión de que, cuando llevas 45 años haciendo algo, tienes que ser flexible".
Sobre futuros proyectos: "Tengo un espectáculo de rock que se llama Excalibur y espero que llegue a América. Es u gran espectáculo con 140 personas, con acróbatas y bailarines, es muy divertido. También es buena música. Es un proyecto en el que quiero trabajar más. Luego tengo mi propia banda y salgo a la carretera con ella de vez en cuando, y es un cambio, otra gente...Mantiene vivo tu cerebro y tienes que aprender un repertorio distinto".
"This is Rock" es una revista mensual, cuyo precio son 5 euros y que ya puedes conseguir en cualquier kiosko de tu ciudad. "Thick as a Brick" Played in Special 2012 Tour.
Ian Anderson ha anunciado que para el proxímo año 2012 habrá gira de Thick As A brick, para conmemorar su 40 aniversario, e interpretaran integramente el álbum, algo que no hacian desde 1972, cuando hicieron la gira de presentación del entonces nuevo álbum.
La gira mundial comenzará a mediados de Abril en el Reino Unido, luego llegara al resto de europa a finales de la primavera y pruncipios de verano, para posteriormente seguir en América durante los meses de Septiembre, Octubre y Noviembre.
La gira incluirá interpretaciones teatrales, video y elefantes bailarines (?).

Ian Anderson Announces the Thick As A Brick Tours for 2012.

Ian Anderson performs Thick As A Brick in its entirety for the first time since 1972, going out for a world tour commencing in the UK in Mid-April. Then, it's on to European countries in the late Spring and Summer before landing in the USA for two tours spanning September, October and early November.
This tour will feature a more theatrical production with video, additional musicians and a troupe of dancing elephants. (Just kidding about the dancing elephants: they don't dance.,...)
In 1972, Ian wrote the music (and the lyrics which were credited at the time to the fictitious character, 8 year-old Gerald Bostock, whose parents lied about his age) and recorded with Jethro Tull, Thick As A Brick. The record became a number one Billboard album and enjoyed huge commercial success in most countries of the world. The album featured only one song, lasting nearly 45 minutes. To accommodate the album on LP vinyl and cassette, the seamless track was split on both sides of the record. It reached number one on the US Billboard Pop Albums chart.
Tull then dutifully took the somewhat theatrical show on the road in the Great Britain, USA, and other world markets.
Since 1972, the album has never been performed in its entirety although a few minutes of the material have been a regular repertoire staple in both Tull and IA solo shows over the years.
Now, scheduled for performance again in 2012, Ian will take the original album to a theatre near you. It will be performed in its entirety in a theatrical setting with band, and additional guests.

IX CONVENCION DE TULLIANOS (ASOCIACION DE SEGUIDORES DE JETHRO TULL).
La novena edición de la Convención de Tullianos se celebrará el próximo sábado, 9 de julio, en el Auditori Marc Grau de Gavá (Barcelona).

El plato fuerte de este año es la presencia de IAN ANDERSON, John O'Hara y Florian Opahle, que ofrecerán un concierto acústico de 45 minutos. One of the joys I get from writing about vintage rock is the chance to talk to some of the greatest musicians in the world. And Ian Anderson, in my book, is easily in the top five. Even better is the fact that I've been given the opportunity to speak with the Jethro Tull leader on three separate occasions. Each and every time he has astounded me with his insight, attention to detail, his recall of historical milestones, his wicked sense of humor and mild courtesy. In the past, my interviews with Anderson have spanned his entire career; this time I narrowed my focus to one particular subject: Aqualung.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Aqualung is unquestionably Jethro Tull's most popular album. Needless to say, the band has some big plans to honor the record — plans you can read about in the interview below. Ian and I also talked about the making of Aqualung — the inevitable bumps in the road and more importantly the triumph of its eventual success. And then, just to throw things off course, there is one last question about Jethro Tull’s future. You may be pleasantly surprised at the answer. I know I was. Then again, Ian Anderson always seems to have any number of surprises up his sleeve. At the end of the day, it’s all to keep the bigger picture in perspective.

The Beatles have Sgt Pepper, Dylan has Blonde And Blonde, Pink Floyd has The Dark Side Of The Moon and Jethro Tull has Aqualung. With that in mind, would it be fair to say that Aqualung is a definitive representation of what Jethro Tull is all about?

Well, in truly commercial terms, the answer would be yes. It being the single, best-selling album. But then again, it's had 40 years to sell that number of copies. It wasn't an instant, out-of-the-box big seller. It sold steadily over the first few years of its life to establish Jethro Tull internationally. I guess it’s the album, perhaps along with Thick As A Brick a couple of years later, which defined the band being established in most of the major record markets. Today, it supplies very much the benchmark repertoire of the band. Even at my other concerts with string quartets, acoustic shows and so forth, we have two or three songs from the Aqualung album — long-established must-have songs.
Now you’re coming over here to play some shows, doing Aqualung in its entirety.
For the second time, we’re doing all of the Aqualung album in concert. About five years ago, we did a bunch of shows in the UK and a few in the US. where played Aqualung, It was something we did at the suggestion of XM radio in Washington some six, seven years ago when they asked us to come into their studios and perform all of Aqualung live as a radio broadcast. There’s a whole bunch songs on there that we never played live and I couldn’t see myself wanting to do that. However, after listening to the album back then, I decided it was worth giving it a shot and we agreed to do this for XM and we released the recording as a limited edition album for charities for homeless people in the U.S. and the UK.
It was a worthwhile thing to do. We then went out and played a bunch of shows, particularly in the UK, doing the whole album. So, we’re doing that again. In September, there’s a collector’s edition of the Aqualung album being released by EMI, which I just finished working on in conjunction with Abbey Road studios. An engineer has remixed the album very nicely in 5.1 surround as well as stereo, so the collector’s edition will have the original mixes, the remixes, the 5.1 mixes and about 11 bonus tracks, including some outtakes from the album, which we were able to find amongst the old tapes stored at Abbey Road studios these days.
Will the 5.1 mix be on SACD or Blu-ray?
It’s not on Blu-ray. It will be released as a pack with a CD and DVD. We only just finished this in the last week or two. Believe it or not, I have a CD of the remixes sitting on my desk that arrived a couple days ago, but I only got back a couple of days ago from a Latin American tour. I haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet, but I will to do that tomorrow morning. I listened to the final mixes, but I haven’t heard the actual mastered versions, which had been put into the final trim at Abbey Road studios.
Going back to the making of Aqualung, wasn’t it your first wife Jennie who came up with concept for the title track?
She had a photograph of some people she had been photographing when she was studying photography at a college in London. Her assignment was to go and photograph homeless people in South London, which she did. She came back with the photographs and she had written on the back of a photograph some description of one of the characters. The picture caught my eye and the word she used to describe him. And so I said, “Let’s make this into a song.” So we did and it became the title track of the album.
On the copy of Aqualung I have, she gets full credit for the song.
She was my first wife and that was a nice way of saying good bye.
The album also courted a bit of controversy, with songs like “My God” and “Wind Me Up,” which were initially perceived as anti-organized religious.
It’s fair to say they were critical of organized religion — a stance I maintain to this day, in spite of the fact, mysteriously to some, I’m a supporter of Christianity and every year I play concerts in churches and cathedrals, and it’s something that I do. But I can still be critical of various religions, particularly Christianity; because it’s the one I’m closest to and have the most knowledge of. To be critical and not condemn it outright is, to me, quite easy. It’s not a contradiction in any way. There’s no dilemma at all in that. I’m a supporter of Christianity, but I am critical of certain aspects of it. And I wouldn’t call myself a Christian. I’m a supporter, I’m not a Christian. But then again, I could support the Manchester United Football team and not be a soccer player, couldn’t I? I could be a scientist who is passionate about the evolution of dinosaurs, and yet not have sharp teeth and a scaly tail. Not a contradiction there.
I read the sessions for Aqualung were problematic — a new studio, new bass player who didn’t really play bass, scheduling. With all these issues, did you have any idea you were making such a pivotal record?
We did because we knew it had to be. It was either the beginning of the slippery slide to oblivion or it was going to be another step up in terms of a career. I won’t speak for the others, but I was very conscious of the fact that this was a pretty important album and it had to be a bit of a landmark album. We’d done OK with three albums, but this was the one that was going to make or break us. It wasn’t an easy album to make from a technical perspective.
We had one or two difficult times in the studio, which resulted in several attempts to record some of the songs. It wasn’t that they were bad — they just weren’t quite right. Some of those outtakes are on the collector’s edition. They’re part of the evolution to the final product. A couple of the songs we played live on stage for months before we actually went into the studio to record them. It wasn’t an easy album to make mostly surrounding the technical issues, working in a brand new studio using untried and untested equipment, which unfortunately was letting us down. It wasn’t an easy ride.
And you ended up playing lead guitar on “Locomotive Breath”?
Well, I play one of the guitar parts and Martin Barre plays the other. In fact, I was listening to those in the multi-track about three weeks ago in the studio and I said, “Hold on a minute…let me just see who’s playing what here.” We had three attempts to record it that were spectacularly unsuccessful and this was about the fourth time we tried to do it. So I went on out into the studio and just did a kind of metronome bass drum and high-hat track for three and half minutes or whatever. And then I went out and played some guitar parts with an electric guitar. And then we overdubbed some tom-toms and cymbals…well, our drummer did. And the bass part and the guitar part and tacked the keyboard introduction to the beginning.
It was rather like making a Pink Floyd album. None of us were in the studio at the same time (laughs). The only way to record that (“Locomotive Breath”) was to sort of lay it down. It has a sort of metronomic pulse. It wasn’t gelling as a band piece. So I went out and did it in a rather artificial way, but it resulted in the desired effect.
Is Aqualung your favorite Jethro Tull album?
It’s certainly one of them. I don’t really have a favorite. I have favorite songs rather than favorite albums. It certainly is an album that I think is a good benchmark for everything we’ve done since then and obviously before then. It stands the test of time pretty well because a number of the songs on the album are songs about real issues. Whether it’s touching on religion, homeless people or prostitutes — these are realities of life today. It’s not an album that’s rooted in some historical perspective. It’s not about getting to San Francisco and wearing flowers in your hair. It’s not something that’s caught up in an nostalgic moment of whimsy. It’s something about issues as real today as they were 40 years ago when I wrote the songs. And those are the songs that are more upbeat and humorous or whatever. They’re songs that avoid the temptation to being pinned down and being from a certain year or certain time. They are songs of whimsy but nonetheless timeless whimsy. They border on being a little surreal in terms of lyrical content, songs like “Mother Goose” and “Up To Me.”
They’re, I suppose, a product of having read books by Jack Kerouac as a teenager. And I followed the works of painters like Magritte and Dali, who were people who kind of looked at things from a sideways glance. They had a different way of seeing things, seeing the world, and presenting them in a rather surreal way. But that was a product of the times in the UK because British humor was heading that way as well. These were the days of Monty Python, a rather surreal form of humor, which began prior to that with Round The Horn, The Goons and on to Monty Python and even these days with Little Britain. There’s a very clear-cut line of British comedy. It has an evolution, but it definitely went through quite a surreal moment with the Python folks, which I think rubbed off on me as a musician and a songwriter. Preceding that and paralleling that was, of course, Captain Beefheart who was a prodigious and very clever lyricist in the late 60s in the U.S.A.
Would it be safe to assume there are no plans for an Aqualung 2 on the drawing board?
It’s pretty safe to assume that because there’s been lots of songs since then that have touched upon some of the same areas of lyrical material as Aqualung. There’s a number of other songs that have touched upon religious matters and other social issues, but I don’t think putting them together and calling it Aqualung 2 would be a particularly good idea. There are other albums I suppose that if I thought about it, I could probably say, “How could we go about examining that.” Years and years later, would there be a merit in doing that? Perhaps there are other possibilities.
I think of Aqualung as a series of songs. It was widely touted as a concept album, but I never saw that myself. I saw it as a collection of songs, two or three of which had some common ground in terms of touching upon religious matters, and two or three touched upon social issues. I never designed it to be a concept album at all. It was perceived as such because that was the mood of the times. Writers and critics were gleefully looking for something along those lines.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Aqualung, but it’s been over a decade since the last Jethro Tull studio album. Any chance we’ll get a new Jethro Tull studio album anytime soon?
I do have, currently, a whole album written and prepared, and in fact scored in Sibelius, one of the music composition programs, and al the lyrics and arrangements done. I’m looking forward to going to the studio to record it, but it won’t be until November because between now and the end of October, we’re pretty much on the road all the time. I finished writing that in the beginning of April or the last week of March. I spent a few days with my guitar player and keyboard player doing the job of consigning it all to written arrangements. But it’s on ice until we have a recording session with rehearsals starting at the end of October. We have about six weeks of studio time booked. So, yeah there will be something next year coming out around the end of March.

JEMS master recording. This is an excellent sounding recording. This show captures Jethro Tull touring in support of their War Child album. This recording has circulated for years but this is the first time the master reels have ever been properly digitized (April 2010). This is an excellent show and performance with an early taste of an excerpt of Minstrel In The Gallery which would not be released until later in 75. Ian's in between song banter at this show is as entertaining if not more entertaining than music. Also of note this show took place on the 25th of July not the 27th as some other sources have speculated in the past.

Entrevista a Ian Anderson, líder de Jethro Tull (El Universal, Caracas, Venezuela): "Jamás me aburriré de dar conciertos".

"Esta vez será en su mayoría eléctrico, rockero, pero habrá un algo de momentos acústicos también".

Hace poco Ian Anderson, legendario líder de la banda británica Jethro Tull, dio un recital en simultáneo con una navegante espacial de la Base Internacional Espacial. "Eso fue en Rusia. Toqué junto con la astronauta norteamericana Cady Coleman, fanática de la banda, quien se llevó una de mis flautas al espacio. Somos muy amigos e interpretamos el tema Bouree para conmemorar el 50º aniversario del viaje de Yuri Gagarin. Fue muy bueno hacer música juntos. Se trató de un experimento muy importante, mandar un poco de cultura al espacio", cuenta vía telefónica el flautista, guitarrista y cantante escocés de rock progresivo-experimental.

Impregnado por una motivación ecléctica nata, el creador del álbum Aqulung (1971) se embarca en una gira mundial que pisará suelo venezolano el próximo 21 de mayo en el Anfiteatro del Sambil. Blues, folk inglés y rock, sazonado con destellos de música barroca y renacentista, forman parte de la propuesta que Anderson ha moldeado desde sus inicios en la música. Canta y toca magistralmente diferentes tipos de flautas, también la guitarra acústica, mandolina, saxofón, y otros instrumentos.

Hace casi 4 años que la reina Isabel II de Inglaterra, como reconocimiento a sus aportes al mundo de la música, le otorgó la Orden del Imperio Británico en calidad de Oficial. Y como todo un caballero hace la llamada telefónica para iniciar la entrevista con un: "¡Hola, soy Ian Anderson! ¿Esperabas mi llamada, verdad?".
-Ya conoce al público venezolano, pero ¿diría que le genera expectativas regresar?
-Nunca he tenido expectativas, espero que me sorprendan las cosas. Volver a Caracas es importante. Estaré con mi banda, tocaremos un poco del álbum Aqualung que siempre es muy pedido, interpretaré cosas clásicas de Jethro Tull, temas de la banda que no hacemos muy a menudo, mi repertorio solista y algo nuevo quizás. Esta vez será en su mayoría eléctrico, rockero, pero habrá momentos acústicos también. Lo que verán será un poco más ecléctico dentro del concepto de Jethro Tull. No quiere decir que no sea Ian Anderson tocando, pero tiene mucho del sentimiento de Jethro Tull... que también es mi banda.
-¿No percibe como si cada concierto es el primero de su carrera?
-Es de lo que se trata un concierto de rock, ser capaz de liberar esa sensación de estar en tarima por primera vez. Cada vez que te subes a un escenario es como si fuese la primera vez tocándole a gente diferente, lugares diferentes, sonidos diferentes. Depende de cómo lo concibas, es refrescante. Jamás me aburriré de dar conciertos. Mayormente por las características del show y por los músicos, que le ponemos algo de improvisación. Todos tratamos de tocar algo diferente todas las noches. Eso es lo más importante de estar en el escenario: cambiar algunas notas... No es hacer pop ni quedarte en una misma fórmula que suene igual. Improvisar en la música es muy importante para mí.
-¿Entonces sigue experimentando el miedo que sienten los músicos antes de empezar un concierto?
-¡Uhm! Lo que me pone nervioso es que haya algún problema técnico antes de subir a la tarima, porque muchas veces eso puede interferir en el buen desenvolvimiento del concierto. Pero tampoco es un gran problema, puedo lidiar con eso, junto a los rodies o técnicos. Me ponen nervioso, por ejemplo, los dos shows que voy a tener en Australia en los próximos días, porque no habrá prueba de sonido. Hay poco tiempo por tratarse de un Festival. Debemos llegar y literalmente fijar todo antes de montarnos y balancearlo en el momento.
-Las reseñas en los medios estadounidenses acerca de su gira solista tienen posiciones encontradas. Algunas sostienen que es un show intenso a pesar de lo acústico.
-Te refieres a los shows de octubre-noviembre. Sí fueron mayormente acústicos. No te preocupes, en Latinoamérica será más rock. Será en la vibra de Jethro Tull. Vengo de Turquía, donde el ambiente fue más agitado y la sensación más rockera. También estuve en Irlanda y Portugal. Me gusta cambiar lo que hago en vivo. Me gustan los cambios, el dinamismo, siempre lo vas a ver.
-¿Está consciente de que el público latinoamericano es más enérgico en los shows?
-Un poco. Creo que la gente se comporta diferente de acuerdo al tipo de concierto. Los italianos son muy locos, pero varía si estás en espacios abiertos o en sitios cerrados, así también es el comportamiento de los alemanes. El comportamiento de cada uno es de acuerdo con las circunstancias. Todo lo que hay que hacer es captar su esencia , su comportamiento, qué tanto alcohol haya en su organismo, no es gran problema. Sé que en Venezuela tienen una energía y locura tremenda... veamos cómo los guía el alcohol.

Their hit singles are almost non-existent. Yet most fans of popular music during the Rock era are familiar with many of their songs. In fact, many know many by heart.
In the 1970s, they were one of the most popular bands on the planet, selling out albums and concerts around the world. On the Billboard album charts, they rank 20th on the list of best sellers in the ’70s.Of the 19 artists above them, just Barbra Streisand, Chicago and John Denver have failed to gain entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In fact, of the 10 ranked below them, just one – Grand Funk Railroad – has yet to be inducted.
Like Grand Funk, Jethro Tull, our topic for this week, was/is immensely popular with the listening audience. But, not surprisingly, most critics had/have little good to say about Ian Anderson (lead vocals and flute) and Martin Barre (lead guitar) and their varying supporting cast, and, at present at least, this seems to weigh heavily on a band’s chances of entering the “hallowed” Hall.
Still, when a band puts up numbers the likes of Jethro Tull and does it for over 40 years, it’s time for Anderson, Barre and company (band members over the years number into the 20s), to receive their just due.
Tull first made its presence felt in United Kingdom concert appearances as the ’60s drew to a close. With the band playing what was then described as a mixture of blues and jazz behind the madman antics of their front man, British audiences responded by sending their initial LP, 1968’s “This Was,” into the top 10, while U.S. record buyers ran it to No. 62, a more than respectable showing for a new group without a hit.
The following year, Tull broke the British singles market with two top 10 hits, “Living In The Past” and “Sweet Dream,” and the “Stand Up” LP, though it didn’t include either hit, became the group’s only No. 1 long-player in the UK. It was far from their lone UK success, though. “Stand Up” also broke the band in Norway, starting a string of six straight Top 10 LPs there.
And while “This Was” had opened the American door for Tull, “Stand Up” pushed them right through, reaching No. 20. Album No. 3, “Benefit,” did even better in the States, just missing the top 10. It didn’t follow “Stand Up” to the top in the UK, but it didn’t miss by much, peaking at No. 3.
Remaining a favorite concert attraction and having established a constant presence on flourishing FM progressive rock radio, Tull had become one of the most popular bands in the world by the time they released their first true blockbuster – “Aqualung.” The title cut and “Locomotive Breath” became radio staples and the album became a classic, hitting the top 10 in the US and UK. Even Rolling Stone praised the album’s “fine musicianship” and considered it “serious and intelligent,” eventually ranking it No. 337 on its list of 500 all-time best albums. Guitarist magazine listed Barre’s guitar solo on the title track on their list of “20 greatest guitar solos of all time.”
How do they come up with these lists? Well, they get a group of “experts” to choose them, Rob Sheffield for one. Sheffield calls Charlie Watts the greatest drummer in rock & roll history, so perhaps these lists should be taken with a shaker of salt…assuming you haven’t lost it.
It was nice to see “Aqualung” fairly well received in the media, but Anderson was displeased the album had been pegged as a concept work. In response, he promised, “If the critics want a concept album we’ll give the mother of all concept albums and we’ll make it so bombastic and so over the top…” That they did, the entire album being one 45-minute song. Anderson later claimed the resulting “Thick As A Brick” was a spoof of progressive rock albums. Whatever it was, it worked, becoming Tull’s first No. 1 album stateside and reaching No. 5 in Britain. The sarcastic and humorous newspaper cover didn’t help endear Tull to its critics.
The next “new” release, “A Passion Play,” also hit the top of the United States chart and the next, “War Child,” just missed, stopping at No. 2.
But get this, the same two – Mark Coleman and Ernesto Lechner – that ripped Rush in The New Rolling Stone Album Guide, wrote this in that same “esteemed” publication…“The immediate success of Aqualung spurred Anderson to indulge his artistic whims, resulting in two challenging, wildly experimental, and occasionally obtuse theatrical concept albums: Thick As A Brick and Passion Play. After that strategy backfired, Jethro Tull returned to traditional song structure on War Child and the acoustic-flavored Minstrel In The Gallery.”
Backfired? BACKFIRED? How does consecutive No. 1 albums qualify as strategy backfiring? Maybe Anderson intended to produce two duds? That’s like saying the Phillies acquired Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt and the moves backfired as they won the next two World Series. We all should have such career backfires.
Recovering from that “slump,” Tull continued to release best-selling works, four more LPs hitting the US top 20 before closing its most productive decade with “Stormwatch,” which peaked at No. 22. In the spirit of a true super group, Jethro Tull continued to release new material as the years passed, charting six US albums in the 1980s, four reaching the UK top 20, including “Tne Broadsword And The Beast,” which also climbed to No. 19 in the US, and four more best-sellers in the ‘90s.
In 1987, Tull, always hard to classify, found out just what category it fit when “Crest Of A Knave” won the Grammy for “best hard rock/metal performance vocal or instrumental” beating out Metallica and Jane’s Addiction in what Entertainment Weekly called one of the 10 biggest upsets in Grammy history. Hard rock? Heavy metal? Anderson, Barre and company didn’t even go to the award show figuring there was no way they would win. Later, their label, Chrysalis, took out an advertisement informing the public – tongue in cheek, of course – that “the flute is a heavy metal instrument.”
Anderson, Barre and cohorts still tour worldwide, live albums being the result the last few years. A live performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony would be most deserving.

"A NEW DAY", MAGAZINE SOBRE JETHRO TULL, PUBLICA SU MÁGICO NÚMERO 100. Acaba de publicarse en Europa (con dos meses de retraso con respecto a UK) la edición número 100 del magazine "A New Day", la revista sobre Jethro Tull que dirige Dave Rees. Aparte de contarnos que pronto
estará con nosotros también el número 101 (como continuación a éste número 100) que incluirá criticas de nuevos CDs, DVDs, libros, incluso LPs, éste capítulo tan especial incluye la primera parte de un magnífico dossier sobre la historia de todos los bateristas que han pasado por Jethro Tull a lo largo de su historia, en las que leemos algunas sorpresas.
Otras noticias son la publicación en CD del nuevo trabajo del ex-teclista de la banda Andrew Giddings (hasta ahora solo podía conseguirse a traves de descarga digital), y la inminente salida del tercer trabajo de John Carter, producido por Martin Allcock, y con colaboraciones especiales como la de Martin Barre en algunas canciones.
"Los otros bateristas de Jethro Tull" es el título del trabajo sobre ellos que firma Martin Webb, como comentábamos más arriba. Aquí se da un repaso a absolutamente todos los hombres de las baquetas que han colaborado con el grupo de un modo u otro, deteniendose en algunos hombres importantes (Gerry Conway, Paul Burgess), a los cuales entrevista sobre su paso por la banda de Ian Anderson. La relación de drummers que Mr Webb cuenta es la siguiente:
-Clive Bunker (1967-71, estudio y directo)
-Keef Hartley (1968, directo "presuntamente"). Nos paramos aquí. Primera gran sorpresa. Desconociamos que éste músico estuviera envuelto en una etapa tan importante para los Tull. Pero creo que no lo recuerdan ni los miembros de la banda que en aquellos años formaban parte de la misma. Segun Martin Webb, preparando éste artículo descubrió un libro autobiografico de éste músico en la que cuenta su relación con los Tull:
"Recibí una llamada de mi amigo Mick Abrahams, quien entonces estaba tocando con Jethro Tull. La cosa empezaba a ir bien para ellos, y tenian una serie de conciertos ya firmados para hacerlos en verano. Sin embargo, tenían un problema con su batería, Clive Bunker. Clive había contratado sus vacaciones anuales de verano, como hacía todos los años, y se negaba a cambiar sus planes, aunque la banda tuviese firmado esa gira de verano. Era de la opinión de que siempre había cogido esas dos semanas de vacaciones en verano, antes de entrar a formar parte del grupo, y no veía razon para cambiarlo ahora. La banda entró en estado de pánico. Clive seguí inflexible en sus planes, pero sin un batería se verían obligados a cancelar dos semanas importantes de la gira. Con su album de debut ya grabado y a punto de editarse, la cancelación de esas fechas sería un suicidio artistico, así que empezaron a buscar un batería que pudiera unirse a ellos en el ultimo minuto. Ví a Mick Abrahams unas semanas antes cuando él acudió a un show de Graham Bond, pero él aun no sabía de mi intención de abandonar a Graham. Mick me llamó para saber si conocía de algun bateria que se les pudiera unir para esas dos semanas, y se mostró encantado cuando le dije que yo podría hacerlo. Y así lo hice, pero no fué lo más divertido que haya hecho en mi vida. Los Tull eran una banda extraña en aquellos tiempos, con riñas internas todo el tiempo. Ian Anderson en particular, obviamente, se veía a sí mismo como el líder de la banda, y tenía el molesto hábito de hacer callar e ignorar a todo el mundo. Lo intentó conmigo varias veces, pero no entraba en mis planes recoger la mierda que él iba dejando. Le dije que era yo quien le estaba haciendo un favor, y no al reves, y que si no cambuaba su actitud podía meterse el trabajo por el culo. Con mis dos semanas de trabajo completados, recogí mi dinero y, agradecido, me fuí. No fué una gran sorpresa para mí descubrir que a final de aquel año Mick abandonara, y que no mucho más tarde tambien lo hiciera el bajista Glenn Cornick".
Ian Anderson tiene un vago recuerdo de haber tocado con Keef, pero no recuerda ningun concierto. Glenn Cornick sigue perplejo, "No puedo negarlo, pero no recuerdo nada de eso. Podía haber sido un buen candidato porque nos conocíamos de los dias en el Marquee". Mick Abrahams confirma que eran amigos pero "aunque recuerdo haber tocado con Keef, era más en plan jamming. No recuerdo nada así exactamente". Martin Webb ha tratado de ponerse en contacto via email con Keef pero no ha conseguido respuesta. Significante. ¿Verdad o mentira?.

-Gerry Conway (1981-82, directo y estudio). Extensa entrevista la que le hace Martin Webb al señor Conway, donde repasa sus inicios como músico y se extiende en su etapa Tull:
"Tuve que hacer una audición para entrar con los Tull, lo cual siempre es complicado. Lo que ocurrió fue que yo me había mudado a Los Angeles en 1978, y en 1980 me llamó Jerry Donaghue para decirme que los Tull estaban en la ciudad de gira y si íbamos a verlos aquella noche. Fuimos, porque quería encontrarme con mi amigo Dave Pegg, al cual ví, y tambien con Barrie Barlow y el resto de la banda que tocaba en los setenta. Pero las cosas habían cambiado, y me encontré con Eddie Jobson tocando teclados y Mark Craney a la batería. Nos encontramos en el backstage al acabar el concierto y nos invitaron a tomar unas copas en el hotel donde se alojaban. Allí estuve charlando con Ian Anderson, al cual encontré muy amigable y relajado, y que me preguntaba cosas sobre Cat Stevens, con quien salí de gira y a quien Ian admiraba. Dos semanas mas tardes recibí una llamada de Kenny Wilie quien me preguntaba si queria hacer una prueba con ellos. Fué un momento excitadisimo ("¿como?, ¿con los Tull?!!!). Volé a Inglaterra e hice la audición".
-Bruce Rowland (1982, solo una actuacion en televisión haciendo playback).VER ACTUACIÓN EN YOUTUBE. "Jethro Tull se encontraron de pronto sin batería y necesitaban uno para una actuación en un programa de televisión en Alemania. Volé hacia allá y lo hize. Pero realmente no toqué con los Tull porque hicimos playback. Me aprendí las partes de batería y creo que lo hice bien, aunque no me gustaba la canción. Realmente nunca me han gustado los Jethro Tull. Y no me gustó la manera en que Ian Anderson despidió a Gerry Conway"...Ian Anderson creo que ha dejado mas enemigos por el camino que el mismísimo Roger Waters, ésto lo digo yo, no Bruce ni nadie.
-Phil Collins (1982, sólo participó en un concierto de caridad con los Tull)
-Paul Burguess (1982, directo). Martin Webb entrevista al músico nacido en Manchester en 1950.
-Doane Perry (1984-ahora, directo y estudio)
-Scott Hunter (1991, estudio). Scott Hunter(actualmente es escritor y acaba de publicar un libro titulado The Trespass) participó en la grabación del album "Catfish Rising", pero por error no salió en los creditos cuando el disco se publicó. Ian Anderson rectificó el error en la versión remasterizada en CD, pidiendo perdon a Scott en las notas interiores del nuevo libreto. "Encontré un anuncio en el Melody Maker que Ian Anderson puso, el cual decía algo así como "Se necesita baterista, guitarrista y teclista para trabajar con lider de una banda con largo recorrido internacional, para projecto paralelo en solitario", telefoneé para conocer mas y me llamó la atención que en el anuncio el telefono era acreditado a un tal Kenny. Yo sabía que Kenny Wilie era el manager de producción de los Tull, y se me pasó por la cabeza que pudiera ser Ian Anderson quien publicaba el anuncio. Lo descubrí cuando el tal Kenny me dijo que mandara una demo a Salamander Music. Ya no había dudas.Mandé una demo con temas folk, aunque ellos buscaban músicos con formación blues. Unas semanas despues Kenny me llamó y me dijo que tenía una prueba en los estudios Beacon Bottom. Me caí de la silla. Era un autentico fan de ellos desde hacía años. Songs From The Wood me pareció en la época un disco tremendo, crecí con ellos, y ahora tenía la oportunidad de tocar con ellos. El día de la audición llegué temprano. No había nadie más. Pensé que me encontraría con otros bateristas, pero ni rastro de ellos. Luego fueron llegando Kenny, Dave Pegg, Martin Barre, y por fín Ian Anderson. Todos se pusieron a preparar sus instrumentos y comenzaron a tocar algunos temas del repertorio del grupo. Ian me habia mandado una cinta con Aqualung, Farm On The Freeway y Locomotive Breath, y pasé mucho tiempo ensayandolas antes de venir. Incluso escribí algunos arreglos de bateria propios para esos temas. Ian se sorprendíó de que los hubiera escrito. Ellos no leen partituras, aprenden de oído. Tambien había un teclista haciendo la prueba pero no recuerdo su nombre, pero al final él no grabó el album. Y allí estaba yo, tocando Farm On The Freway, miraba a mi izquierda y veía a Pegg, y a mi dercha veía a Barre, y entre ellos al gran Anderson. Tambien tocamos algunos temas nuevos, Sleeping With The Dogs, y Still Loving You Tonight. Terminé la audición y no supe más de ellos hasta que meses despues Kenny Willie me telefoneó para decirme que el tema Still Loving You Tonight, que había grabado con ellos, era el que aparecía en el nuevo album, Catfish Rising, pero que por error no salía acreditado. Me sentí bien y mal a la vez. Gracias que años despues, en le reedicon remasteriozada del CD, Ian arregló el error y me pidió perdon".

Jethro Tull conectará con la Estación Espacial Internacional.

Moscú, 6 abr (EFE).- La banda británica Jethro Tull, que el próximo día 12 ofrecerá un concierto en la ciudad rusa de Perm, conectará durante su actuación con la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI) y tocará un tema junto a la astronauta Catherine Coleman, informó hoy la productora Grenn Wave Music. "La astronauta estadounidense Catherine Coleman, que se encuentra ahora en la Estación Espacial Internacional, tocará junto a Ian Anderson", líder de la banda, precisa el comunicado, reproducido por la agencia Interfax. Este proyecto está dedicado al 50 aniversario del primer vuelo del hombre al espacio, hazaña protagonizada por el cosmonauta soviético Yuri Gagarin. Coleman, que se confiesa seguidora desde hace tiempo de Anderson y Jethro Tull "se llevó consigo a la órbita un regalo del músico: una flauta". "El 12 de abril, durante el concierto en Perm (montes Urales), tocarán juntos, Ian Anderson en la sala grande de la Filarmónica de Perm y Catherine Coleman en el cosmos", agrega el texto. Este acontecimiento músico-espacial tiene lugar en el marco del proyecto conjunto de Anderson y los legendarios Jethro Tull con el conjunto moscovita Opus Posth, liderado por Tatiana Grindenko, que les llevará a actuar también el 13 de abril en Moscú y un día más tarde en San Petersburgo, según la productora. Además de Coleman, integran la actual tripulación permanente de la EEI el cosmonauta ruso Dmitri Kondrátiev y el italiano Paolo Nespoli. Esta misma noche se les sumarán los cosmonautas rusos Andréi Borisenko y Alexandr Samokutiáyev y el astronauta de la NASA Ronald Garan, que llegarán al laboratorio orbital a bordo de la Soyuz TMA-21 "Gagarin".

C.P.: 31194tel: 948330387 Los componentes de Un Tal Jethro son José Ignacio Martínez, que formó el grupo Tundra en Barcelona, ciudad donde reside habitualmente, Josu Salbide, flauta, guitarra acústica y mandolina, componente de Oskorri, Fabián Tapia, bajo, integrante de bandas como 2112 (una de las primeras formaciones de rock sinfónico-progresivo de Nafarroa), Dinosaurios o Tximeleta, Karlos Cabodevilla, guitarra eléctrica, para el que esta es su primera banda formal, y José Landa, batería, de larga tradición: Kafarnaún, primer batería de Barricada, Malos Tratos, con quienes grabó tres excelentes discos, primer álbum de Txarrena, Los Dinosaurios, La Familia no Recibe... y, en paralelo a Un Tal Jethro, O-X Band, formación también de versiones y banda estable de una de las tabernas más dinámicas en directos de toda Euskal Herria, Onki-Xin, que Landa lleva con excelente criterio y compromiso con la música desde su apertura hace ya un buen número de años. A los navarros se les acaba de añadir una sexta pieza, también de Barcelona, Gabriela Guardiola, piano, sintetizador y acordeón, quien colaboró en el pasado con grupos italianos de covers de Jethro Tull. Estos son los protagonistas de Un Tal Jethro, resta saber cómo se unen catalanes y vascos. José Ignacio (el catalán) y Josu (de Oskorri), ambos fanáticos seguidores de Jethro Tull, se conocen en una convención sobre Jethro Tull. Cuando Josu oye cantar a José Ignacio, se queda impresionado por el estilo y la similitud vocal, por lo que se fija la idea de hacer una banda tributo. El resto fue ponerse a reclutar los músicos adecuados en Iruñea. «El repertorio que hemos elegido abarca desde su primer disco de 1968 hasta los publicados a principios de los 90, así se pueden escuchar temas menos conocidos de trabajos como «This was» o «Benefit» y también los míticos «Thick as a brick» o «Aqualung». De todos modos intentamos tocar todos los clásicos, porque el público reacciona mejor. Por ejemplo, aparte de los citados, canciones como «Locomotive breath», «Minstrel in the gallery» o «Living in the past» funcionan muy bien en directo. En la parte central del «Too old to rock´n roll to young to die» nos tomamos una libertad y sustituimos la flauta por una gaita navarra y el personal se lo pasa en grande... Ya me gustaría que Ian Anderson oyera esta versión para saber qué opina», comenta un entusiasmado José Landa. DIARIO GARA

IAN ANDERSON EN BILBAO, SALA BBK, 7 DE FEBRERO. CRITICA DEL CONCIERTO EN LOS MEDIOS.

Maestro y flautista.
Un lujo, un privilegio fue el ver a Ian Anderson, el líder de Jethro Tull, con banda en un recinto pequeño como la Sala BBK. Agotó el aforo maduro el lunes y el martes y nosotros acudimos el lunes, cuando el locuaz Anderson actuó durante 112 minutos presentando los títulos y operando cual 'maestro', como le chilló alguien durante la ovación en pie que brotó al acabar el concierto. Maestro de las letras, de la interpretación a la flauta y la guitarra acústica, de la escena teatral...
En su show sonaron 17 piezas de folk progresivo en un repertorio pulcro, creciente, brillante, efectivo y perfectamente ejecutado. Predominaron las piezas de Jethro Tull, se intercalaron algunas variaciones instrumentales de música clásica, y cayó un tema inédito de Anderson, 'A Change Of Horses', con aire hindú y junkeriano por el acordeón. Se empezó bien: fusión para 'Living In The Past', el heterodoxo blues de su debut 'Beggar's Farm'... Se colegían trazas folk, se colaban agresivos arreglos progresivos y se hollaron cimas gloriosas, sobre todo 'Thick As A Brick', un tobogán donde Anderson no llegó con la voz pero lo supo disimular. Para el final reservó un virtuoso 'Budapest', un 'Aqualung' lamentablemente mutado y menos eléctrico, y en el bis 'Locomotive Breath'.

Una leyenda en concierto.
Ian Anderson, el líder de Jethro Tull, explica en Bilbao su aprecio por "destrozar" las actuaciones - "Me gusta dar algo inesperado".

Ian Anderson asegura que se siente cómodo en las imágenes que le identifican como una leyenda de la música, retratado tocando la flauta. Anderson, el líder de la banda británica Jethro Tull y compositor de la mayoría de sus canciones, puede presumir a los 63 años de llevar más de dos terceras partes de su vida volcado en la música. Ayer ofreció en la Sala BBK el primero de sus dos conciertos en Bilbao, dentro del ciclo Music Legends, que en los próximos meses contará con las actuaciones de Marianne Faithfull o John Mayall, entre otros gloriosos veteranos del oficio. "Es agradable ser recordado por lago positivo", asegura. "Prefiero ser una leyenda de la música que ser recordado por ser miembro de una dinastía de dictadores de Oriente Medio", añade.
Anderson ha alcanzado la categoría de legendario sin perder la ironía que le permite afirmar que considera sus actuaciones un éxito si le pagan y el público no monta bulla a la salida. ¿La fórmula para lograrlo? "Nunca tengo expectativas ante un concierto", confiesa. "No espero nada cuando salgo a tocar y la audiencia tampoco debería esperar nada. Me gusta destrozar las expectativas ante una actuación en directo, dar al público algo inesperado y ofrecer cosas desconocidas".
En su comparecencia ante los medios de comunicación Anderson pidió brevedad. Consiguió que las preguntas se concentraran en menos de 30 minutos, pero no escatimó el tiempo para responderlas con una exquisita profesionalidad y hablar de dinero, de la familia y, sobre todo, de música.
Anderson guarda un buen recuerdo de las relaciones económicas con las discográficas, en las que reconoció haber encontrado personas entusiastas en la defensa de sus intereses. Ahora, con la industria en crisis, los conciertos suponen "el refugio" donde los músicos obtienen el dinero que ya no llega de la venta de discos, ni de las descargas por Internet. "Tocar en directo siempre ha sido importante para mí; define a los grandes grupos, es el factor de diferencia. Algunos graban en estudio y no son capaces de tocar en el escenario".
Desde su privilegiado punto de vista, Anderson ofrece un diagnóstico claro de la situación de la música: "Creo que en el rock se está produciendo un reciclaje de las viejas ideas, especialmente, de los años sesenta y setenta". "La música folk, en cambio, está viviendo un renacer en el Reino Unido, recorriendo senderos nuevos. En el folk hay más creatividad hoy en día; el rock es un género que difícilmente supera sus fronteras".
Solo los Rolling Stones superan en veteranía al líder de Jethro Tull. A Anderson no le cuesta imaginar a Mick Jagger, cuatro años mayor que él, como una estrella eterna del rock and roll. Sobre el aguante de Keith Richard, reconoce, tiene sus dudas.

IAN ANDERSON REEDITA "WALK INTO LIGHT" (1983).

Hoy, 8 de febrero se reedita “Walk Into Light”, el álbum con el que debutaba en solitario Ian Anderson, carismático líder de Jethro Tull. Publicado originalmente en 1983 y con colaboraciones como la de Peter-John Vettese, teclista de Jethro Tull que también es coautor de la mitad de las canciones del álbum, esta edición incluye ilustraciones originales y un libreto de ocho páginas. El texto del libreto tiene particular relevancia para la historia del pop británico porque explica la postura de Anderson en aquellos años, incorporando al disco las nuevas tecnologías desarrolladas para los teclados de una manera completa y radical. "Walk Into Light", un álbum de música tecno-pop con claras influencias de grupos de la época como Ultravox, incluye buenos temas como "Different Germany" ó "Fly By Night", que en su momento fué lanzado como single de adelanto del disco y tuvo cierta repercusión en España.

El legendario flautista de Jethro Tull, actúa hoy y mañana en Bilbao.

Nuestro querido y admirado músico actúa hoy y mañana en la Sala BBK ( 7 y 8 de febrero, 20.00), dentro del ciclo Music Legends. La organizacion ha cerrado una segunda fecha con el histórico líder de Jethro Tull, después de que se agotaran "en pocos días" las entradas para el primer concierto, según explicó en una nota.
Este programa busca "hacer un hueco a aquellas aventuras musicales de artistas que se dieron a conocer en grupos mundialmente reconocidos y que continúan en activo con nuevos proyectos". Acompañarán al cantante, compositor, flautista y guitarrista escocés John O'Hara a los teclados y el acordeón, David Goodier al bajo, el guitarrista Florian Opahle y Scott Hammond a la batería. Las entradas se pueden adquirir en la propia sala BBK, en la web www.bbk.es o en el 944 310 310.

El ciclo ha confirmado además hasta el momento las visitas de Marianne Faithfull (5 de abril), John Mayall (14 de junio), Albert Lee (24 de junio), y Bill Wyman (11 de julio).

Legendario por méritos propios y carisma rompefronteras, el flautista y vocalista Ian Anderson, mundialmente conocido por ser el líder del jurásico pero aún en activo grupo de folk progresivo Jethro Tull, actuará hoy y mañana en Bilbao (Sala BBK, 20 h) en sendos conciertos que han vendido el aforo con gran antelación. Sobre sus bolos, la estrella del rock anticipa: «Van a ser una mezcla de música acústica y de rock, con improvisaciones de la banda y variaciones de las canciones más añosas de los Tull. Como no tocamos en Bilbao cada año, tendremos en el repertorio un puñado de las canciones más conocidas del grupo».
El polifacético Ian Anderson actuará en un quinteto conducido por él a la voz, flauta y guitarra, y completado por John O'Hara (teclados y acordeón), David Goodier (bajo), Florian Opahle (guitarra) y Scott Hammond (batería). «Los conciertos de los Tull generalmente presentan el repertorio más conocido y más eléctrico. Mis shows resultan más variados: acústicos, orquestales, con cuartetos de cuerda, invitados especiales o en ocasiones también canciones más estridentes de rock».
El líder se resta importancia al hablar sobre la fuerza y el entusiasmo que le debe rebosar a la hora de mantener dos bandas diferentes, los históricos Jethro Tull y su grupo en solitario: «Los dos no son tan diferentes. Únicamente hay un puñado de canciones que varían y dos músicos diferentes. Es el mismo equipaje, la misma aerolínea y el mismo par de zapatos». Persona dinámica, Ian Scott Anderson, nacido en Dunfermline, Escocia, en 1947, nos atiende desde una de sus moradas. «Me encuentro en mi despacho, en el suroeste del reino Unido. Ahora me ocupo de asuntos de oficina, luego compondré un poco y por la tarde tendré ensayo». El flautista vive en el campo y cuando no está de gira, viajando de ciudad de concierto a ciudad de concierto, este suele ser su horario habitual: «Por la mañana despacho en la oficina y por la tarde y la noche me centro en la música. A mitad del día paro para almorzar y descansar».
Coleccionista de relojes.
Organizado y ambicioso, Anderson compagina sus facetas como músico/artista, como empresario (es un empresario salmonero dueño de 43 piscifactorías, varias de ellas instaladas en Chile) y como amante de la naturaleza (cría gatos monteses, cultiva distintas variedades de guindillas...). Sobre su capacidad para ordeñar su tiempo y ordeñar su vida, señala: «Bueno, en realidad los negocios eran algo muy estresante y muy exigente. O sea que me decidí a seguir adelante con la música después de estar veinte años ocupándome en otras actividades empresariales».
Con todo, sigue cuidando de los gatos monteses. En su mansión mantiene una veintena larga de ejemplares. Le gustan «porque a ellos no les agradan los humanos demasiado. O sea que tenemos algo en común. Sin embargo, tienen colas más largas que la mía. Y, desafortunadamente, vidas más cortas».
Irónico, misántropo, coleccionista de relojes y cámaras de fotos antiguas, dueño de su propio estudio de grabación, cantante que no permite fumar en sus conciertos, multiinstrumentista (también toca, el bajo, la balalaika, el saxofón, los teclados..) y estudioso del viejo folk isleño, el culto y cáustico Andersons además es doctor en Literatura. Sobre sus escritores favoritos, elige con precisión: «Para la intriga, los espías y los 'thrillers' políticos, John Le Carré. Sobre detectives e investigaciones, Mark Billingham. Y, por estar en la vanguardia de la ciencia ficción pionera, Ray Bradbury, John Wyndham y C.S. Lewis».

El sello RandM Records ha publicado éste nuevo recopilatorio en el que se mezclan canciones de Ian Anderson de sus albumes en solitario junto a temas de la mítica banda interpretadas en directo (extraídas de sus discos "Ian Anderson plays the orchestral Jethro Tull" y "Aqualung Live". Sólo la cancion Songs From The Wood es la original publicada por el grupo en 1977.

Disco de agradable escucha, pero que no aporta nada nuevo a su larga discografía. Apto para hardcore-fans y coleccionistas.

The album is a mix of songs from the Ian Anderson solo albums plus live versions of Jethro Tull songs taken from the albums "Ian Anderson plays the orchestral Jethro Tull" and "Aqualung Live". Visioni e fantasie nel segno dei Jethro Tull
A cura dei fans italiani - 2010.

Il rapporto tra l'Italia e i Jethro Tull ha qualcosa di speciale, di magico, soprattutto di ininterrotto e costante. Dai tempi dei primi concerti italiani di Ian Anderson nel 1971, i fans tricolore hanno costantemente dimostrato un affetto immutabile, anche nei momenti di maggiore difficiltà e scarsa ispirazione della celebre band. Il fans club Itullians è noto per le numerose iniziative e i fans italiani rinnovano il loro amore con questo interessante volumetto dedicato all'immagine dei Tull.

Glauco Cartocci (che ricordiamo per le piacevoli pubblicazioni con Aereostella), l'iperattivo prog-blogger Athos Enrile e un manipolo di appassionati hanno recuperato vecchie e nuove foto dei Jethro Tull e le hanno "incastonate" nel logo JT: in questo modo ciò che vediamo è una sequela di rielaborazioni grafiche che mostrano la lunga storia dei Tull.

Ovviamente quando si parla della formazione il riferimento visivo immediato è quello del flauto di Ian, ma non mancano immagini di Barre e Hammond-Hammond, Bunker e Abrahams, persino l'agronomo che ha dato il nome al gruppo e anche Dave Pegg e Doane Perry. Gli ultimi due sono coinvolti anche nella prefazione e la suggestione di Doane - "Un'immagine vale più di mille parole" - è la giusta chiave di lettura del libretto. DONATO ZOPPO

Capitol/EMI to Release Jethro Tull's 'Stand Up' in Expanded Collectors Edition on October 25

2CD/DVD Audio and Digital Audio Packages Include Previously Unreleased 'Live At Carnegie Hall' Concert Recording

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- On October 25, Capitol/EMI will release an expanded Collector's Edition of Jethro Tull's Stand Up in a deluxe 2CD/DVD Audio package with replicated original album art and newly-written liner notes by Tull's Ian Anderson. The Collectors Edition is housed in a digipak with a 12-page booklet and for the first time reinstates the original vinyl LP's pop-up element. On the same date, a digital version of the Collectors Edition, including the 31 remastered tracks from the physical version's two CDs, will also be available for download purchase from all major digital service providers.
The Collectors Edition's first disc includes the remastered original album, plus three tracks recorded during the band's first US tour, and the singles "Living In The Past" and "Sweet Dream," which later appeared on the Benefit album. Also included are four songs from sessions for John Peel's "Top Gear" BBC Radio program and two US radio spots.
Disc two contains an edited version of Jethro Tull's 1970 Live At Carnegie Hall concert, a benefit for a drug rehabilitation center in New York City. It was a typical raucous Tull affair, drawing heavily from Stand Up as well as presenting a few new songs from Benefit. John Evan had joined the band by then and his classical piano training is amply demonstrated in this live concert. This is exemplified in songs such as "Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square" and an instrumental interpretation of Bach's Bourree in E minor titled "Bouree," with the latter remaining a concert favorite even today.
Live At Carnegie Hall has never before been released in its entirety and it is presented in a completely new mix. The Collectors Edition's DVD contains the unedited concert audio in 5.1 surround sound, as well as a new audio interview with Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson.
Released in 1969, Stand Up was Jethro Tull's second album, and it marked a shift from the blues-rock sound of their debut This Was, a result of the departure of guitarist Mick Abrahams, who was replaced by Martin Barre. Ian Anderson, playing 12-string guitar, flute and vocals, took over all vocal and songwriting duties and, with his bandmates Barre, Clive Bunker (drums), and Glenn Cornick (bass), created a more folk-inspired album, which topped the UK chart and reached the Top 20 in the US.
In his new liner notes essay, Ian Anderson writes, "In rehearsal and recording, we all tried different approaches to the songs. Clive and Glen formed the basic backbone of the group, leaving Martin and me to experiment a bit more with different sounds and, for the time, some radical techniques in sound recording. We often plugged instruments into the rotating Leslie speaker cabinet to treat the sound with the typical Hammond organ-like tones. Martin's guitar in 'A New Day Yesterday' was recorded with me standing on the guitar speaker cabinet, swinging a microphone, Roger Daltry-fashion around the outside to get a phasing, swirling sound for the main riff."
It was the songs from Stand Up that introduced Jethro Tull to the US and Europe. For many it was their first taste of the eclectic style and varied material of the band and was savoured by enthusiastic and growing audiences wherever they played. Many of these songs still form part of the rotating set lists of Jethro Tull concerts to this day.

Capitol/EMI publicará el proximo 25 de Octubre una nueva version extendida y "Deluxe", que incluirá 2 CDS+DVD, del album "Stand Up", originalmente editado en 1969 por el grupo Jethro Tull.

El album incluirá una réplica exacta de la portada original y nuevas notas de Ian Anderson en el interior del libreto de 12 páginas.

El primer CD incluirá el album remasterizado, más tres temas grabados durante la primera gira del grupo por los USA, y los singles "Living in the past" y "Sweet dream". Tambien incluirá cuatro canciones de las famosas sesiones de grabación para el programa de John Peel en la BBC, "Top Gear", mas dos anuncios publicitarios del album americanos de la época.

El segundo CD incluye una versión editada del famoso concierto de 1970 en el Carnegie Hall.

"Live at Carnegie Hall" nunca ha sido publicado en su totalidad, y aqui es presentado en una mezcla totalmente nueva.

El DVD contiene la version del concierto sin editar y en sonido 5.1 surround, así como una nueva entrevista en audio con Ian Anderson, quien dice, entre otras cosas, "Al ensayarlo y grabarlo, intentamos darle diferentes formas a las canciones,Clive y Glenn formaban la columna vertebral de la banda, mientras nos dejaban a Martin y a mí experimentar con diferentes sonidos y tecnicas de grabacion, por entonces, en el estudio de grabación. Enchufamos instrumentos a los altavoces rotativos Leslie para intentar conseguir el sonido típico de los organos Hammond. La guitarra de Martin en "A new day yesterday" fué grabada conmigo sentado encima de su bafle, balanceando el microfono a lo Roger Daltrey, para conseguir el sonido que queriamos para el riff"

Redbeard was a top-rated Program Director and internationally-known on-air radio personality in Memphis 1978-1983 and Dallas/Ft. Worth 1984-1998. As one of the original “Dirty Dozen” Program Directors hired, Redbeard pioneered XM Satellite Radio as the first afternoon host of “Deep Tracks XM-40″ from September 2001 through June 2002. In 2007-2008 Redbeard hosted afternoons on Lone Star 92.5/KZPS in Dallas/Ft. Worth, a unique Texas regional rock/Americana hybrid that featured no recorded commercials.

¿NUEVO ALBUM DE JETHRO TULL PARA EL VERANO?

British rock veterans Jethro Tull are said to be planning a new album in addition to a summer U.S. tour. Starting on June 11th in Miami, the tour will then take the group north to Boston, Chicago and Toronto, among others.
Tull’s plans for a new album will end an 11-year drought for the group, one that is remembered for iconic hits such as “Aqualung,” “Locomotive Breath,” and “Living In The Past.”
Regarding the new album, enduring frontman Ian Anderson says, “I have sent material over to America where the band are working on it. That’s kind of how it works these days but they seem to like what I am doing.”
No release date for the new material has yet been announced, but it is probably a bit too early in the process. Perhaps there’s a chance they will showcase a taste of their new work while on tour. (REALROCKNEWS.COM)

JETHRO TULL-LIVE AT AVO SESSION BASEL (15 Noviembre 2008) -NUEVO DVD OFICIAL-CRITICA, REVIEW:

Por sorpresa nos llega el nuevo DVD oficial de la banda (Live At AVO Session Basel), y digo por sorpresa porque a día de hoy aún no se ha anunciado en la web oficial jethrotull.com su salida a la venta.

El DVD en cuestión lo lanza la compañía discografica alemana Edel, y llega con el sticker "Jethro Tull. The new oficial live DVD. All the best in a memorable concert" pegada en la portada, lo cual le da oficialidad al lanzamiento.Además, el propio Ian Anderson dedica unas lineas en el libreto del disco, al estilo de como lo hizo en las ediciones remasterizadas de los CD´s de Jethro Tull, en la cual habla de la profesionalidad de los organizadores del evento a la hora de grabar el show, del encanto del pais (Suiza), restaurantes hindús (sus favoritos), etc.

Ya sabiamos de la existencia de éste concierto porque fué retransmitida por TV y circula por ahí copias piratas tanto de video como de audio de dicha retransmisión. Pero lo que aquí se nos dá es una copia en DVD de una calidad excepcional video/audio (Dolby Surround), no podía ser menos si llega avalada y aprobada por el mismísimo Anderson. La verdad es que los amigos de Edel Records han hecho un trabajo extraordinario. Y la presentación (caja, portada, folleto) no se queda atrás. Una delicia para los fans de Jethro Tull.

En cuanto al contenido, la banda nos regala uno de sus mejores shows de su época reciente. Con su formación actual (Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Doane Perry, John O´Hara, David Goodier), la formación va interpretando clásico tras clásico abriendo con My Sunday Feeling y cerrando con el habitual Locomotive Breath.

Hay agradables sorpresas, como Nursie (muy pocas veces interpretada en vivo), Rocks On The Road, Heavy Horses, y una estupenda recreación de Dharma For One, de su primer disco (This Was), breve sólo de batería de Doane Perry incluído. En total son 90 minutos de concierto que se disfrutan desde principio a fin. Como complemento, el DVD viene con algunos extras relacionados con el Festival donde se grabó el film:

FROM THE BENCH TO THE STAGE WITH IAN ANDERSON. ROCKBAND.COM INTERVIEW PART 2.

Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson doesn't like virtual music games—or any other kind of game, for that matter—but that didn't stop him from giving us the longest and most wide-ranging interview we've yet had on the site. Nearly 40 years after recording the Rock Band tracks "Aqualung" and "Hymn 43," Anderson has plenty of sharp thoughts on music, politics, cyberspace and the world at large…

Part Two opened with a true story about what really happens when you play Shea Stadium and you're not The Beatles. Also here are Anderson's thoughts on receiving the MBE, his personal favorite Tull song, and a grizzled look at gaming.

Brett Milano: This is a different subject entirely, but about a year ago they tore down Shea Stadium and a lot of talk was about The Beatles playing there, which of course was a famous [show], but you played there too. I'm wondering if you have any memories of that particular gig.

Ian Anderson: Yes, I do. I have two, two profound memories. One is the great insult that can be paid to a person is to assault him with urine. And one of the things that happened to me is, I was waiting to walk on at Shea Stadium while we were standing in an area where the audience was up above us at some point. And somebody – I felt something raining down on my head. I thought someone poured a beer or something, but then realized – from the smell – that it was actually that someone had peed in a drink glass or whatever and poured it down. I'd have to assume intentionally, since we were waiting for the cue to go out to the stage. It's certainly an unpleasant way of starting a concert. Thank you very much. And these people I assume bought tickets and would be masquerading as fans, so it's rather unpleasant. So that's one memory. The other memory is rather like The Beatles. It was pretty impossible to hear what we were playing during the show, not because of the audience screaming and little girls fainting and going into orgasmic moments of pubescent confusion over the whole thing, but really because of the sound of nearby LaGuardia airport. [laughs] A lot of United and – what would it have been back then? – Allegheny and a whole bunch of other airlines who don't exist anymore. Braniff, remember Braniff? [laughs]

BM: Vaguely.

IA: Lots of airlines that used to fly in and out of LaGuardia. And these days people know they're not still flying, with a few exceptions. But it was incredible because the flights were just circling and coming in to land. It just absolutely obliterated the music. Especially in quiet sections of Thick as a Brick, you know the acoustic stuff was completely drowned out. So that was another memory. Somewhere at the back of that, you're aware that The Beatles played there once and we played there and maybe it seems like a big occasion, but really it was just rather, not one of those concerts you remember for the right or good reasons, but just because it was a frustrating concert, particularly in the beginning.

BM: Speaking of things The Beatles also did, I know you got the MBE recently, and we in America don't always know what that means. Could you tell me a bit about that?

IA: Well it's more like the village postman award. The MBE is the lowest form of award given to you essentially by the Queen for services to the public. There's the MBE, the OBE, and the CBE which – it's not that they have different rank, but the order that is given to most people is the MBE, as a member of the British Empire. It's just a recognition of public service, in my case services to music and public events. Now that the Westminster and the Number 10 are kicking about terms of royalty. We have a system in the UK where recordings are protected in copyright only for a period of time, a period of fifty years after they were recorded. In the US it's currently ninety-five years because, strangely, Sonny Bono – he was the one who campaigned successfully to have copyright term extended to ninety-five years, I believe. And so, in the UK we wanted harmony with the Americans and a global right to protect the copyright for the great works, for instance of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, plus a huge amount of jazz and classical music and folk music and great recordings that I believe should stay out of the public domain and should remain as potential money-earning copyright recordings to the benefit of the music industry. To employ people, to pay musicians and they continue to be part of the economic cycle of music. In an age when a lot of people think you shouldn't have to pay for music anymore, that you just get it free from the internet regardless of copyright, then that's a sentiment that many people seem to support. Most of the music industry of course, did but unfortunately the politicians at Westminster, a few of them gave us their support and I think I got an MBE as sort of a "Thanks for trying, son" [laughs]. "Have this instead…" A medal from the Queen. Well, actually from Prince Charles, who's the one who bestowed it upon me. But anyway, it's a great thing to get, but most of us wouldn't dream of adding those letters to our name. The big accolade is to become knighted, to become sir, as in Sir Elton John or Sir Paul McCartney, or even Sir Mick Jagger. And you don't find these people wandering around referring to themselves as Sir Mick or Sir Elton. People happily accept these things and modestly put them to one side. And so it is quite probably with any honorary title. You can be very grateful and generously acknowledge your peers who've awarded you with such recognition, but I think it's a bit in for a dig, a bit tacky to be wearing these as badges of honor. BM: Let me ask, a couple of minutes ago, you named "Back to the Family" as one of your worst songs. If somebody put a gun to your head and asked you to name a couple of the best, what would those be?

IA: Oh wow, well, probably…I've often cited the song "Budapest" as an all-embracing Jethro Tull song, because it is essentially, it starts off as an acoustic kind of groove and it's a blues-influenced song with some classical, western classical influences and a middle instrumental section and it gets quite rock-y towards the end, but it's a sort of mid-tempo, solid, straight-ahead tune with some combining elements of acoustic music, rock music, and classical music. And it's such that it wraps up a big chunk of what Jethro Tull is about. An albeit rather long song by radio play standards, but I think that's one of my good songs. It's a song that is observational. It's not autobiographical, it's an observational song. I guess that's what I feel most comfortable doing is writing music that is – it's about people in a landscape. If I continued to be a painterly person, having begun studying art as that goes in England, then I'd carry on with that. I guess I would have been someone who liked to paint people in a context. I wouldn't have been a pure landscape painter and just painting scenes of romantic rural bliss. I would've been someone who wanted to see people in that context. I wanna see them close up and personal, and look at them. But I wouldn't want to be a portrait painter. I was just in the National Portrait Gallery a couple of days ago and I thought, "I'm gonna make myself go," because I'm not really a fan of portraiture or such, but I should go and see what some current prize-winning portrait painters are up to and in the summer exhibition at the National Gallery. And I went and thought, well, it's very, very good, but I'm missing something. Which is I have all these glorious people and shiny and detailed close-up in many cases, but I don't know where they live. I don't know what they're doing. I don't know where they live. I don't know what they're doing. I don't know why they're there, why are they sitting like that? What's the context in which these people exist for this frozen moment of time? I'm not happy with that missing information. So I rather like the idea of people within a landscape. I like to sing songs about people, but I've gotta position those people in a context because for me it brings them to life. That's what I feel happiest doing as a songwriter. But I don't only do that or always do it, but that's the area where I feel most comfortable. I'm least comfortable singing heart-on-sleeve, autobiographical, personal-sounding, emotional songs. I'm least comfortable doing that. I've done it, but it's not something I make a huge habit of.

BM: It seems you got away from that after maybe the first few albums. I guess everyone comes into it somewhat doing that, right?

IA: I guess it is partly because it's very much expected because that makes up the big body of work of most of what's been written in pop and rock music. It is about singing about emotions. And they're usually pretty simple and they're usually connected to being in love or out of love, but that's the classic love song isn't it? In all of its variety and it's probably the thing I feel least comfortable doing. I don't find that easy. It starts off as a given, really, for a young songwriter to be working in that area and then I suppose you develop, perhaps by hearing other people or by just trying it out yourself, you start to find other ways to give music some substance literally and you find other subjects to treat and a different way of doing it. You add more strings to the bow or strings to your guitar in my case and try to do, give a little more bread to the songwriting experience.

BM: I always wondered if the woman in "Budapest" whether that song has kind of followed her around as being the girl in that song. Has she ever connected with you since that song happened?

IA: Well there's no connection with me in the first place. As I said it's an observational song, it's about watching someone who became the subject of the song. And I'm actually singing a song really through the eyes and ears and fantasy of someone else. I won't mention who that someone was, but it's someone else close to me. And I'm kind of singing it for that other person, really. It's partly based on being in a room and seeing something, partly based on somebody else recounting to me their thoughts about it. But it's a sort of look-but-don't-touch song, and as such I think it's ultimately, although sung in a way which might suggest a kind of sexist approach, it is very much a hands-off sort of beyond this point we don't go kind of song. I think it's not necessarily the best song, but it's one that does embody the elements that I like to think are strongly associated with the Jethro Tull audience and music experience. It wrapped a lot of those things up. But no, I've never - I seem to remember a couple of times, we've played many times in Budapest since then and a couple of times the promoter [has said], "Ah, you know the girl who was the trainee or young athlete or whatever it was, apparently she knows about the song and blah blah blah blah blah. You know would you like to meet her?" And I said, "Oh goodness me, now would I like to do that?" Apart from anything else she's, I would imagine, she's probably someone approaching the age of forty, so it would seem, it would be a little awkward, I imagine, for her too. To be a mature lady, probably married with children and certainly no longer a middle distance runner, which is what she was, so I was told. I like the idea of a song where you're actually talking about something very physical and slightly romanticized terms, but it is clearly just something from across a crowded room, and that's it, that's all there is. It's just a little moment, a little fleeting moment, and then you gather some of the thoughts around her and other people's thoughts and you make something of it. But it's very much sort of a role-playing fantasy, but it also involves singing a song and playing real instruments. It's a role-playing fantasy of a video games. That's why I always come back to this thought that if you're going to be person who indulges in fantasy and the "what if?" scenarios and has something developed and how you impact things, it's so much better to pick up a real instrument and write a song. Or pick up a pen and paper and write a book.

BM: One of the thoughts is that hopefully what we do with the game will encourage people to do just that, if they get a bit of vicarious taste of it and they say, "Okay, I want to do this for real now."

IA: Hmm.

BM: That's the hope, anyway.

IA: Well one would have thought they would have got that vicarious thrill through actually being at a concert and watching musicians play live, from smelling the audience and smelling the fear and from musicians walking onto a stage and taking their lives in their hands in front of baying crowds. That would have been - one would have thought - would have turned the vicarious thrill into firing you up to do that, or not. Somehow I find it difficult to imagine how anybody gets a real kick out of sitting in front of a computer screen and pressing buttons. Or the kind of - I think it's coming back, I think I've seen it on the television screen about gadgets and computer things that people playing these plasticy-looking guitars and it's just, well, I just can't really find any...it's a bit like, why? Who's inventing something the world actually doesn't need? But people will gravitate to it because it's there. Because it seems fun, because it's loud and aggressive. It's simple as a fantasy, but I must say from the point of view of pretty much all gameplay, I'm just one of those people who's just never found games particularly enjoyable. Even if it's a game of cards or dominoes or Monopoly or whatever. I mean, I've played these things, I've played video games when video games were first invented back in the '70s when the first primitive tennis game called Pong, I think, unleashed itself in the pubs and bars and maybe recording studios in the UK. It was something that [the people] said, "Well, wow this is great," but we used to laugh at it and joke about it as being quite infantile and when things became more sophisticated and when my children were beginning to grow up with games like Frogger and Ski Slalom and Pac-Man and all that sort of stuff, and I thought, "Well this is okay if you're five or six-years-old," [laughs]. Frankly I would rather go fishing than play Pac-Man, or I'd rather go play golf with Alice Cooper than play Pac-Man. And I hate golf and everything to do with it. I hate golfers. [laughs] I'm just not a game kind of guy. I'd rather go for a walk. If I want a game, I'll invent a game. That's what I used to do when I was a young dad. I used to invent games to play with my children. And they would say, "Come on daddy, make up a game!" And I'd make up a game with rules and whatever was to hand, and we'd make up a game. And we'd play that for a couple of hours until everyone was completely exhausted, and then we wouldn't play it again because the children were so excited by the prospect of, "Make up another game daddy!" Very rarely did they say, "Oh, let's play that game again," because they always were much more interested in the more sort of creative thing of a new game which we would invent. And it would be something that none of us had ever done before. I think that was part of the fun.That was a game-playing and role-playing as you went along.

JETHRO TULL LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1978 dvd+cd CRITICA-REVIEW.

No sé por donde empezar. Bien, por el princípio, que es lo normal. En Octubre de 1978 Jethro Tull fueron invitados a ser retransmitidos via satélite desde Norteamérica para todo el continente europeo. Era la primera vez que ésto ocurría, y por lo tanto habia que prepararlo bien.

Se eligió el concierto del 9 de octubre en el Madison Square Garden neoyorkino, festivo en Norteamérica por ser allí el Dia de Colón, y se eligió el programa de la BBC2 "The Old Grey Whistle Test" como via de conducción para la retransmisión. Pero no iba a ser una retransmisión al uso de un concierto de rock, ya que solo estarían en antena unos 50 minutos. Que hacer con el resto del concierto. Ian Anderson y la banda idearon que la parte que retransmitieran para televisión fuera la parte intermedia del concierto. Y cómo hacerlo. Pues lo más raro que yo he visto en un concierto de rock. Jethro Tull salen a tocar unos 20 minutos antes de que empieze la retransmisión, interpretando "Sweet dream", "One brown mouse" y "Heavy horses", y entre medias Ian Anderson va avisando al público que en unos minutos estaran en directo via satelite para toda Europa. Tras acabar de interpretar "Heavy horses" el sr. Anderson avisa a la audiencia de que va a comenzar el show por televisión y que necesitan retirarse y volver a salir para dar el pego en la tele de que acaba de comenzar el concierto. Y así hacen. La banda se retira, llega la señal via satelite, Mr. Anderson, entre bastidores agarra el micrófono y presenta ante una camara de televisión el espectaculo, y, acto seguido toda la banda sale al escenario para interpretar "Thick as a brick". En casa nadie sabe nada, sólo creen que acaban de comenzar el concierto. Tocan durante unos 50 minutos y, al final de "Locomotive breath" la señal de televisión te avisa, mediante un "Good night" en pantalla de que ésto se acaba. Fin del concierto, pero no para los asistentes en directo al mismo, ya que seguiran disfrutando otros 30 minutos más del sonido de la banda.

La primera vez que pude ver éste video, en 1988, fue en una reposición que hizo TVE de "Popgrama", cita cultural de los primeros años 80 en nuestra tele donde sacaban a muchos de nuestros héroes musicales. Y tengo que decir que quedé pasmado de la actuación del grupo y, sobre todo, del gran Anderson. Teneis que saber que era la primera vez que los veia actuar, aunque era fan de ellos desde 1984, y que entonces no existía internet ni nada parecido donde poder bucear en busca de imagenes.

Bien, he de deciros que ésta edición en DVD plasma extraordinariamente bien lo que pasó aquella noche y cómo fué ideado. Para empezar, el sonido es muy bueno (ojalá "Bursting Out" hubiera sonado igual), pero esto es ya lo mínimo que se le pide a una edición oficial, en estos días. Lo que sorprende es lo bien que está extructurado el DVD, y me explico. Lo primero que tienes que hacer es escucharlo con auriculares ó poner el 5.1 si lo teneis. Cuando dais al play empieza a sonar los primeros compases de la intro (si andas despistado creerás que estas en un concierto de Tangerine Dream por las florituras teclísticas que nos regalan Palmer y Evans) mientras en la pantalla iras viendo una sucesión de fotografias de la banda durante aquel show, ésto ocurrirá hasta que empieze la retransmisión. Van sonando "Sweet dream", "One brown mouse" y "Heavy horses" para luego Ian Anderson decirle al público que se van para dentro y volverán a salir cómo si empezaran el concierto porque va a empezar la retransmisión via satelite. Y...zas¡, aparece en tu pantalla la señal de televisión con una calidad tremenda. Aquí comienzan los famosos 50 minutos de video que tanto hemos visto ya pero con muy buena calidad de sonido e imagen, y se van sucediewndo los temas, "Thick as a brick", "No lullaby", "Songs from the wood", "Aqualung" y "Locomotive breath". Pero cuando la retransmisión termina ellos siguen tocando con un tremendo instrumental (incluido sólo de batería) que sólo había escuchado antes en el bootleg "Dark Haity", mientras en tu televisor aparece la frase "Good Night". Cuando la señal de video se vá, aparece Anderson (ya en audio) para decirle a la audiencia que la retransmisión acabó y que seguirán tocando un rato más para ellos. "Too old to rnr", "My God/Cross eyed mary" y, otra vez para deleite del personal, "Locomotive Breath". Unicos. Como detalles tecnicos quería comentaros que no me gusta mucho la mezcla que del sonido de los teclados de David Palmer hace el sr. Anderson. Sus teclas aparecen demasiado apagadas durante todo el show, y sólo teneis que comparar, por ejemplo, las versiones del tema "One brown mouse" de ésta edición y la del disco "Bursting out". Incluso, incomprensiblemente, el sólo de saxophone de Palmer en "Too old to rock n roll" se escucha muy mal. ¿Problemas con la cinta master, o cabreo del sr. Anderson con David/Dee Palmer?. Sabieno cómo se las gasta el flautista, todo es posible.

Recomiendo su compra, no lo dudeis. Ademas viene con portada desplegable de carton, y con regalo del CD con el concierto editado en audio. 10 de 10. POR FAVOR, DEJA TU CRITICA/PLEASE LEAVE YOUR REVIEW

On the Park Bench with Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson-Interview

ON THE PARK BENCH WITH JETHRO TULL´S IAN ANDERSON. EXCLUSIVE ROCKBAND.COM INTERVIEW

Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson doesn't like virtual music games - or any other kind of game, for that matter - but that didn't stop him from giving us the longest and most wide-ranging interview we've yet had on the site. Nearly 40 years after recording the Rock Band tracks "Aqualung" and "Hymn 43," Anderson has plenty of sharp thoughts on music, politics, cyberspace, and the world at large…

In Part One, he discusses his preference for playing acoustic over electric guitar, the upcoming non-Tull band tour, and reveals what was the worst song he ever wrote. Ian Anderson: I do my bit within that context, but you have to understand that I don't play those instruments you're associating. I don't do the kind of big, electric guitar thing. While I've played some electric guitar, it's something you kinda do, and you make that noise and it's about turning this sound up to that and sorta putting in this effects unit or using these kind of strings or humbucking pickup or whatever. And you go, "cha chang" and it sounds like everyone else. And you think, "Well I've done that. I don't need to do that one again." [laughs] You get it out of your system pretty quickly and concentrate on things where you have something of your fingertips. Where it's a little more - to me - a little more responsive and organic. And that unfortunately isn't really the electric things. There's some people that do that for a living and it's a joy to do, but it's not my personal experience of music, you see. My guitar player Martin Barre, he's the guy who, when I wrote a riff on the acoustic guitar that went, "bum bum bum bum baaa dum" ("Aqualung") and I sat there in my hotel dressing room somewhere in the USA in about 1970, played that and said, "well this is how it goes [guitar noise], and then maybe we should turn it up a bit and see how it sounds." That's how you arrive at those things. "Locomotive Breath," which was probably around the same period of time, was in fact, funny enough, just before I came to the phone to call you, I was playing "Locomotive Breath" on my acoustic guitar, using a different time signature and key and fooling around with some other ideas for a different arrangement of the song. These things are part of my life and my music-writing, but I don't necessarily feel them perhaps in the context in which you might hear the record was recorded in '70, '71.

Brett Milano: First let me ask about your upcoming tour, because you're touring with a band that isn't Tull, and I'm assuming that you're going to play stuff from a different side of the repertoire. I'm wondering what the plans are for that and where you plan to take things.

IA: Well the guys that I play with include some musicians that have on-and-off played with Jethro Tull, have very recently only a few days ago as Jethro Tull because our drummer Doane Perry is in Los Angeles and taking a break. And we had a couple of shows that really for him to fly all the way over to England just to do two concerts and fly all the way back again given that he's gotta come out in just a couple weeks' time to rejoin us for a month and a half of solid touring with the band, didn't make a lot of sense. So we used the other drummer guy. The other drummer used to be my son, but he's busy with his own band and doing other stuff, so the other drummer at the moment is a guy called Mark Mondesir who's essentially known as a jazz drummer. He's a regular guy that plays with John McLaughlin - now there's a guitar player - and he's doing solo stuff with me but has also filled in a couple of times when Doane is not around and it's just a single isolated concert. Who else we got? Florian Ophale, German guitar player who covered for Martin Barre last week because Martin was away in Germany doing a Celtic rock opera. Martin had a week he couldn't do, weekend in fact. The same weekend we had some festival dates, so Florian came and did what hadn't been contracted as a Jethro Tull gig anyway.

Although it's true to say that the "regular band" of Jethro Tull is me and Martin Barre and Doane Perry, plus these days David Goodier on bass and John O'Hara on keyboards, it's a very flexible, movable beast really. Other people come and go and guests come and go playing different instruments. So it's kind of a flexible arrangement. And when I do the solo tour it's obviously to get away from, I supposed, the obvious Jethro Tull context of loud electric guitar with Martin Barre or big thunderous drums with Doane Perry. We sort of move it a little bit more towards either an acoustic or an orchestral setting. I've done tours in the US in the past as more of an acoustic thing and these tours that I'm doing from September on are essentially, well in the UK and America they are acoustic shows and some of the other shows before in Iceland or afterwards in the Czech Republic and Germany, those will feature some electric instruments as well. That's with other musicians and other guests and things going on too. But for the most part the bulk of the dates are what I would describe as really acoustic. It's mainstream Jethro Tull acoustic repertoire, it would be known, I suppose, to the fans. Plus some fairly obscure little songs from the acoustic repertoire. In some cases two or three of them have never been played on stage.

BM: Any hints on which those might be?

IA: Well, funny enough, I was just looking at my setlist and going through it, and thinking, "There's three or four of these songs must be typo. I've missed some of the marks. I might be missing one or two out, but I have to think...one that's never been played on stage is a song called "Just Trying to Be." "March of the Mad Scientist." These are songs from the era just probably around the time of the Aqualung album that were songs that were played in the studio that were just - although they were finished and mixed - they were put to one side and sort of appeared, I think one of them came out on the Living in the Past album, which was in '72. "March of the Mad Scientist" languished in a storage place in a recording studio until it appeared on the Twenty Years of Jethro Tull album in 1988 that would be.

BM: And the "Solstice Bells" single, which I'm glad to say I own.

IA: Oh, that's right. Well, that's actually a Christmas album. I'm going to do a Christmas tune in preparation for the Christmas period, but not that one. But things like "Back to the Family" which was kind of a rock song, sort of, kind of hippie song. I've been playing that one recently and I tell the audience, "This is the worst song I ever wrote. This is actually it. This is the worst piece I've ever done." [laughs] And they look embarrassed and stunned. And I tell them, "The reason we're doing it is I think we can make it sound a bit better now." And also it is really a pretty crap song, but it makes everything else sound so good.

BM: What don't you like about that song?

IA: A lot of things. It's one of those things, you have to revisit these things and meet your own demons once in a while. It's a song that I guess I find a little squirmy kind of. A little bit personal from the era of my leaving home and disappearing for the first time to seek my fortunes outside the context of the family home. It's one of those twisting, calling kind of, mixed loyalties and stuff. It's a song, I guess, looking back at it, I don't really like to think about that part of my life. I don't feel good about it. I think, on the other hand, you have to face up to these episodes that are actually quite pivotal in the way your life develops. That's why I sing it, confronting not demons, but just confronting a slight kind of embarrassed and befuddled period of late adolescence.

BM: It's a pretty universal song if you're 21 or so.

IA: There is that kind of an element to it. People will identify, but for me, personally, it's not a song I feel that great about. So I frequently tell people it's the worst song that I ever wrote. It's kind of half-true. So anyway, that's one of the ones that hasn't been played before, since it was the one and only time we played it in the recording studio. And then there's a few other things that have not made much of a...not appeared in a long time, like "Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square," which I think we played in the UK, but I don't think we've ever done that one in the USA. And then there's a few classic sort of things, "Dun Ringall" from late-'70s period of Jethro Tull. "Jack in the Green" from the Songs from the Wood album. "Skating Away," my first climate change song. I wrote it in 1974 on the War Child album. "Rocks on the Road" which is a largely acoustic piece although it gets a bit louder towards the end.

BM: "Skating Away" is about climate change?

IA: Yeah, oh yeah. Because back in 1974 when scientists first started to pontificate about the effects of carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases, they took a stab at thinking this would actually result in global cooling. They thought it could precipitate a mini ice age, which of course hasn't been seen on the planet for about ten thousand years and may not be seen again in terms of the natural cycle of the earth shifting around for another perhaps thirty thousand years. But there will be another ice age, global heating aside. However, in the short term, people thought, scientists thought, back in the mid-'70s that there was a chance of global cooling, that there would be this blanket of CO2 around the earth which would create more cloud cover and would make the planet that much colder. They got it 180 degrees wrong because obviously as statistics, data, information started to trickle through into the '80s, they realized it's not global cooling we're talking about here. We're talking about global heating. Climate change or global warming is a polite way of saying billions of people are going to die. [laughs]

I prefer the term global heating, because we are actually talking about a substantial - an almost inevitable now - change. Just a few years ago, three or four years ago, people were talking about a degree or two in the next hundred years. Now scientists seem to be agreeing that we are actually looking at something like four degrees as a very likely scenario, which of course means that much of the planet will become extremely difficult to live in. Food production, water resources, along with all of the inevitable problems of the mass migration of large groups of people and problems with Mexicans moving a lot, or do you think that's California's problem? It's not only Mexicans, but a large portion of South America will be heading north and south in that context, so a lot of people around the Mediterranean will be facing horrendous mass political, social, economic migration from Africa. South Africa will have an enormous problem because it's of course it's the only relatively fertile chunk of Africa, which is already becoming overwhelmed with of course political refugees from Zimbabwe in particular. But when things get tough in Central Africa, it's going to be masses of people moving north and south. I mean, all these issues have been scary. They do have to do with running away from just a species including man who spread around the planet in times gone by, driven by the changing planet, driven by the need to hunter-gatherers to collect porridge for food and kill animals and that's not actually so different today when you look at the realities and the parallels of contemporary life.

It's an issue, but lots of people weren't talking about it back in the mid-'70s, just as there are lots of people right now who are living in denial about climate change and the outgoing president kind of all but final year of presidency denying any evidence of climate change. Tony Snow, apart from the White House when he was a spin doctor for Bush, was also struck with that awful disease of just being, just living in this bubble that it wasn't happening. I could take Tony to task a lot about it and say, "You show me any information you can find that scientifically will debunk the data that is now very well established." There's all sorts of websites, you can go to all sorts of places and find out why climate change is just a fabrication, blah blah blah blah blah. Well, send me some links. Show me what you're reading. You know, if that's true, the world needs to know about it. But if it's not true, you and the president and a whole lot of other people have got a lot of rethinking to do. I used to say, Tony, you never came up with any reference for me to take him to task on. Sweet guy that he was, he was one of those who right up until the last few months of his life, he was in denial about climate change, and the sad reality of course when he had to bite the bullet and say, yep, okay, there is a man-made component to this. [laughs] Yeah, okay, we got there. But sadly for some people, including Tony, too late to be a participant in any further education on the subject. As a journalist I guess and ex-White House man, he probably could have done something constructive things. I will say, he would have been a great White House press secretary for Obama. Although he was a Republican to the soul, to the core, I think he was also a true professional, and as a well-respected political journalist, I think he would have done as good or better a job for Obama than he would have done for Bush. But sadly, of course, he would never have the chance. Well how are we doing then? We have climate change, songs, '74. Back then, we started to learn about these things and it seemed like a good idea for a little song. And of course you can look at it now and say, of course it's embarrassment because it was a song about actually the opposite occurring, but maybe not. Because even now, we know that there is a very great potential for the North Atlantic Conveyor, the so-called Gulf Stream, to slow down or even cease as a result of atmospheric warming and surface water warming and if that happens, then we would see a mini ice age that would cover all of North America and all of north western Europe down to the shores of the Mediterranean. So we would see something like the ice age cover that existed ten thousand years ago at a time when we had just a few million humans on the planet and many of them obviously survived. That might not be the case today. It might just be fifty or a hundred years you're saying, gosh that guy was a clever bugger - he wrote a song back in 1974 that describes a scenario of ice sheets coming towards us and having to flee. Anyway, there you go.

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER

Cuando se habla de secciones rítmicas clásicas, siempre se piensa en John Bonham y John Paul Jones o Jack Bruce y Ginger Baker. Sin embargo, Doug Clifford y Stu Cook, batería y bajo de la Creedence Clearwater Revival respectivamente, son los responsables de las pistas rítmicas más fuertes y potentes grabadas en una cinta. Clifford era un batería muy simple, pero tenía un sentimiento que complementaba perfectamente los temas de John Fogerty.

La soledad del corredor de fondo es lo que se nos viene a la cabeza cuando pensamos en la carrera en solitario del que fuera guitarrista de la formación clásica de Genesis, la que firmó clásicos como 'Foxtrot' o 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway'. Ha pasado por todos los estilos musicales en una continua exploración de las posibilidades de su instrumento. El londinense no ha cesado de investigar en toda su carrera.

LOVE

Cuando se menciona la psicodelia, son muchos los nombres que vienen a la cabeza: The Byrds, Yardbirds, Beatles, The Beach Boys, Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, etc. De Love pocos se acuerdan, a pesar de que fueron tan importantes como la mayoría de los citados, además de tener un trío de discos sencillamente genial, compuesto por 'Love', 'Da Capo' y 'Forever Changes'.

Este año ha visto una oleada de actividad de Moore, en primer lugar el lanzamiento del nuevo álbum de estudio 'The Visitor', que a pesar de la ausencia del bajista fundador Pete Way, muestra al rock veterano regresando al estilo del sin duda su mejor lanzamiento más reciente, 'Walk On Water'. Templando su tempo, han basado su fuerza con una saludable dosis setentera de blues rock, la influencia del guitarrista queda acuñada en toda la grabación. Tanto a través de la composición como del trabajo estelar del guitarra que brilla de principio a final.

BARÓN ROJO

acaban de publicar 'En Clave De Rock', un directo en el que se acompañan por la banda sinfónica de Mislata de Valencia. Un trabajo en el que los hermanos de Castro han querido romper ciertos moldes, pero dentro de una manera muy española.

Ayer tuve el privilegio de asistir al concierto que Bruce Springsteen ofreció en mi ciudad y, durante tres horas, me sentí en la luna. El cantante de New Jersey, que el año próximo cumplirá 60 tacos, ofreció un recital lleno de grandes clasicos, intercalados con temas de su ultimo album "Working on a dream". Estuvo simplemente espectacular, en un recinto donde hacía 40 grados de temperatura a la hora de comenzar el show. Que decir de la banda que lo acampaña. Nils Lofgren, tremendo. Little Steven, basico en sus guitarreos pero muy efectista. Max Weinberg, ¿existe un bateria mejor que él?, y Clarence Clemons, con su tremenda imagen (gabardina y sombrero, como siempre, ¡con la que estaba cayendo en forma de calor¡) y sus magnificos solos de saxophone. Como anecdota, y por primera vez en España, Jay Weinberg, tocó la batería en los bises, sustituyendo a su padre, Max Weinberg. He aquí una receta para no morir de viejo: Una vez en la vida hay que escuchar a Bruce Springsteen cantando Badlands. Más de 30.000 personas en Sevilla regresaron ayer noche a sus casas con esa cruz marcada en la lista de cosas que uno debe hacer en este mundo antes de morirse. Para todos esos fans, en esta categoría de imprescindibles, ya sólo hay una cosa que supere el rugido de Badlands, el primer trueno que anoche sonó en el estadio de la Cartuja: Haberla escuchado por primera vez en 1978 en un tugurio de New Jersey, donde el Boss compuso su cuarto álbum, Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Pero antes de que eso ocurriera, la banda quiso presentarse personalmente a la ciudad. Pasadas las diez de la noche, Nils Lofgren caminó solo hacia el centro del escenario, sin guitarra, cargado con un acordeón, tocando los primeros acordes de Sevilla tiene un color especial. Tres días antes, en Bilbao, Lofgren se había marcado la misma performance con Desde Santurce a Bilbao. El efecto debió ser parecido: el público se sintió aludido, entusiasmado y pletórico, y ya no se despegó de la escena durante las tres horas que duró el concierto.

Bruce apareció flanqueado por su dos pretorianos del rock, Steve Van Zandt, el pirata, Little Steve y su guitarra, a la derecha, y el mastodonte Clarence Clemons a la izquierda, el reverendo Clemons, un negro que mide dos metros y va cubierto por un sombrero de cowboy y una gabardina larga, y que porta el mejor saxo de la historia del rock. Todos los componentes uniformados de negro –porque el rock no tiene color, ¿lo saben, no?–. En un cuarto de hora, la E Street Band ya había logrado la rendición incondicional del público, primero con Badlands, y después con Hungry Hearts, que la gente coreó como si a todos ellos les hubieran robado el amor de sus vidas.

Y, sin embargo, el Boss no volvería a desempolvar sus obras de arte hasta muy avanzado el concierto. Cuando llevaba una hora rugiendo, se acercó a la primera fila y recogió con sus manos todos los cartones y cartulinas que le enseñaban sus fans, en cada una una canción, una súplica, un ruego. Y en la última recta final, encadenó un clásico tras otro: Waiting for the sunny day, 41 shots, Love Someday, The Rising, Seven nights to Road, Boby Jean... Hizo algo memorable con She is the one, algo que no está en su disco Born to run, y desgranó la lírica de My hometown como si acabara de volver a su casa después de 30 años de gira, pero con la misma edad con la que la escribió.

Pero con esa artillería fusiló el concierto cerca de la una de la mañana. Antes, eligó un repertorio distinto al del último recital, y reescribió las canciones sobre la marcha, porque para eso es dueño de un estilo al que le escuecen los corsés. Dedicó diez minutos a contar la historia del bandido Pete, Outlaw Pete, el primer sencillo de su último álbum Working on a dream, que es una película del oeste en sonidos de rock escandaloso.

El calor le apretó las cuerdas vocales al Boss, que canta ronco y profundo, y saca el eco de las alcantarillas de América. “¿Tenéis mucho calor?”, preguntó en español, de rodillas, y leyendo una chuleta escrita en el suelo del escenario, mientras cantaba Working on a dream, “¿tenéis mucho calor? ¡Vamos a sacarle el espíritu a la música. Nosotros ponemos la música y necesitamos que Sevilla ponga el ruido!”. Ahí está una leyenda del rock chapurreando el español para que el público no piense que está hecho del vinilo de los discos y del polvo de la música. Volvió a hacerlo más tarde, al sentarse en el escenario, de espaldas a la gente, que le rodeó con los brazos hasta lograr casi que desapareciera en abrazos. O cuando subió a un niño al escenario, le cogió pipas de la bolsa y le invitó a cantar con él Waiting for a sunny day. Aunque el chico no se la sabía, dentro de una década se verá por televisión o en You Tube, y conseguirá ligar con su primera chica. Casi al final sacó a una chica a bailar Dancing in a light.

Las canciones de Bruce empiezan casi siempre por un principio melódico, puramente instrumental, algo que los expertos llaman un riff, como el solo de guitarra que tocó Lofgren durante Johnny 99, en otro de los momentos históricos de la noche.

En directo, Bruce Springsteen no se parece a los músicos que un día le inspiraron. No es como Woody Guthrie, no lleva colgada al cuello una guitarra con un letrero que diga: “Esta máquina mata fascistas”. Porque Bruce no es el blues. Tampoco se sienta en el escenario ni reclina la voz hasta apoyarla en la nostalgia, ni entona cabizbajo ni deja pasar tres baladas seguidas en su repertorio. Sabe que si lo hiciera, el público se distraería de la música y empezarían a pensar en sus vidas, a acordarse de que el tiempo ha pasado y de que siguen escuchando las mismas canciones que hace 20 años, sólo que ahora son más viejos y más feos, y no se han convertido en los tipos que un día creyeron que llegarían a convertirse. Bruce no se parece al viejo Pete Seeger ni tampoco a Hank Williams. No, porque Bruce no es el country. Tampoco hace gárgaras con la melodía como Roy Orbison, no abusa de las composiciones líricas en acústico, como Bob Dylan, y, afortunadamente, no se comporta como Dylan delante de 30.000 fans. Bruce tampoco es el folk.

Bruce Springsteen se parece a Bruce Springsteen. Ese tipo, que el mes que viene cumplirá 60 años subido a un escenario, con los mismos amigos con los que lleva tocando desde 1972 –la incombustible E Street Band- … ese tío que ayer rompió los acordes de su guitarra frente a 30.000 personas que coreaban su nombre es clavado, clavadísimo a aquel chaval de 26 años que a mediados de los ochenta le gritó al presidente Reagan: Nací en los Estados Unidos de América / No tengo trabajo en los Estados Unidos / Nací en los Estados Unidos / Y sólo soy un tío que hace rock en los Estados Unidos. Bruce es el maldito rock and roll, por si alguien lo dudaba aún.
A la una de la mañana, con este cronista amargado y hundido ante el ordenador, el Boss rogaba aún al público que le dejara marchar, pero acto seguido arrancaba rugidos del mástil de su guitarra. Tocó Twist and Shout, incluso escupió los primeros acordes de La Bamba. Seguramente el 50% de los asistentes ayer no había nacido cuando Bruce escribió Born to Run, el 60% no había perdido la virginidad cuando estrenó Thunder Road... Acaban de anunciar su primer trabajo homónimo y ya han causado un gran revuelo entre prensa y seguidores. En exclusiva Satriani y Michael nos hablan de este nuevo súper grupo.

ha sido el artífice de las maravillosas, aunque también extrañas, letras de los psicodélicos Procol Harum. No tocaba ningún instrumento, pero tenía una facilidad pasmosa para jugar con las palabras y formar unos textos únicos, cerebrales y al mismo tiempo apasionados. ¿Cómo olvidar aquellas evocadoras imágenes de 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'?

Hola amigos. Quería comentaros que ya está a la venta la revista THIS IS ROCK en su numero del mes de julio, de la que soy asiduo lector. Me he llevado una gratísima sorpresa al comprobar que éste numero incluye una extensisima (seis paginas) entrevista al señor Ian Anderson, el cual cuenta la historia del grupo desde sus comienzos ademas de decirnos sus planes de futuro. Hablando de futuro, a la pregunta del periodista de si tenia planes de sacar algo nuevo con Jethro Tull, su respuesta es "Hay planes de NO sacar un album de Jethro Tull nuevo, al mundo ya no le importa nada un disco nuevo de Jethro Tull, y los fans siempre esperan que grabemos un THICK AS A BRICK 2 ó AQUALUNG 3, lo cual es imposible a estas alturas", aunque sí precisa que habrá un nuevo lanzamiento de la banda, y no es otro que la comercialización del concierto benéfico en favor de los "homeless" que dieron las pasadas Navidades en una iglesia de Londres. Tambien afirma, ante mi sorpresa, que tiene muchos temas nuevos grabados, a la espera de añadirles voces o sólos de guitarra, pero que no tiene ninguna intención de terminarlas en estos momentos. Malos tiempos para los fans. Una grata sorpresa es cuando dice que estan meditando tocar el album STAND UP al completo en los próximos conciertos de la banda, con motivo del 40 aniversario de la publicación del álbum original. El señor Anderson parecía estar de buen humor el dia de la entrevista, ya que responde a las preguntas con monólogos interminables, de hecho, la propia revista describe a Anderson en el interview como "extremadamente hablador". Incluso se atreve a entrar en la polémica que siempre le ha rodeado sobre su posible mala relación con el cantante de Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, afirmando que son falsas, y contando anecdotas como la de que el bajista del mismo grupo, John Paul Jones, posee una mandolina que fue suya. En fin, que os recomiendo que compreis la revista porque es un reportaje que merece muy mucho la pena. Saludos.

Sossity es un nuevo proyecto en el que se ha embarcado Paul Forrest, lider de la banda tributo a los Tull, The Dayglo Pirates. En ésta ocasion comparte creditos con Marcie Schreier, de fina voz y ademas gran flautista. Aunque en los conciertos ambos comparten la flauta y hacen duetos en las versiones de Jethro Tull, en éste disco es ella quien toma el mando completamente con el instrumento. Apuntar que la señorita Marcie suena mucho mas a Anderson que el propio Forrest. Si quieres conocerlos visita su sitio myspace y disfruta de la impresionante version que se marca el sr. Ya tenemos en nuestras manos el ultimo número del magazine sobre Jethro Tull que dirige Dave Rees "A NEW DAY". Para ser sinceros, la cosa viene cortita, es decir, un número bastante aburrido sin ninguna noticia importante que reseñar o que ya sepamos de nuestras busquedas de noticias a traves de la web. A destacar éstas:
-MARK MONDESIR, nuevo bateria de Jethro Tull. Al parecer, ante la ocupación de Doane Perry en sus proyectos personales y de James Duncan incapacitado por una caída haciendo snowboard, Ian Anderson ha contratado a éste musico de color, que orienta su sonido hacia el jazz, para que se haga cargo d e las baquetas en los próximos compromisos tanto de la banda como de Ian Anderson en solitario.
-Según nos cuenta el colega Dave Rees, Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson estan actualmente grabando algunas canciones, pero aparentemente no seran para incluirlas en ningun nuevo album.El plan, en principio, sería colgarlas en la pagina oficial del grupo para su descarga (previo pago, claro, aquí no dan nada gratis).
-Rumores sobre una posible gira de Martin Barre por Alemania interpretando temas de la banda, algo asi como "Martin plays Jethro Tull". No hay más datos.
-Posibilidad de que el concierto que el grupo dió en navidad en la iglesia de St Bride, en Londres, en beneficio de los "homeless" (vagabundos), el 22 de diciembre de 2008, salga publicado en CD, con los royalties que iran a parar a la asociación que se encarga de ayudar a éstas personas en el Reino Unido.
Ademas, la revista trae criticas de algunos de los ultimos conciertos de Jetrho Tull, criticas de nuevos discos de gente "tan conocida" como Dan Crisp (que ha girado con Martin Barre aunque éste no participa en el album), Helen Andrews (chica que actuó de artista invitada en algun concierto de Ian Anderson de la gira de Rubin Elbows, o ANNA PHOEBE, bella violinista que estuvo de gira con Jethro Tull recientemente. Tull's lead guitarist Martin Barre will be one of the musicians for a one-night world premiere showing of "Excalibur" staged as a rock opera in Kaltenberg, Germany July 25th. Martin shares the musical stage with an impressive list of players including Alan Parsons, Fairport Convention (including Dave Pegg), and John Helliwell ("Supertramp") among others.

It's all part of the 30th anniversary of the biggest knight tournament and medieval festival in Europe ("Kaltenberger Ritterturnier").

EFE El líder de Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson, ha asegurado hoy, durante la presentación de su espectáculo, que intentará aportar un poco de cultura y de música rock aunque este estilo no es realmente el suyo, y ha añadido que Extremúsika es un festival al aire libre donde se esperan lluvias y frío "por lo que intentaré ser una estrella del rock". Así, ofrecerá temas actuales y del primer y segundo álbum de los inicios de Jethro Tull. Ha especificado que el repertorio se ha visto afectado a última hora porque tiene una lesión en un dedo de su mano izquierda, por lo que no podrá tocar mucho la guitarra "aunque sí la flauta". Ian Anderson, a preguntas de los periodistas, ha reconocido que durante toda su carrera ha sufrido censura en algunas de sus letras, "al igual que lo han sufrido otros artistas en España durante la dictadura de Franco". Por ello, en muchos países antes no se ponía su música "al igual que el resto del rock y de estilos algo más modernos y revolucionarios", y ha recordado que "grupos evangélicos y del ala más derecha en Estados Unidos llegaron a quemar algunos de sus discos". Según ha dicho, ahora todo eso ha cambiado porque ya se acepta todo tipo de canciones aunque "echa de menos" ese tiempo y esa lucha porque "en la actualidad no hay con quien enfrentarse", ha especificado. El flautista escocés ha explicado que se siente enfadado con lo que ha hecho el ser humano en estas dos últimas generaciones sin que refleje intentos de cambio, a pesar de que ahora "nos estamos dando cuenta de que hemos hecho las cosas mal". Respecto a los continuos cambios que el nombre del grupo sufrió en sus comienzos, a finales de los años 60 ha dicho que el nombre de Jethro Tull apareció de la mano del que fuera su manager por aquella época, que a la vez era estudiante de historia y el que sabía de dónde provenía verdaderamente ese nombre. Según Andersen, hasta pasadas unas semanas no supo que Jethro Tull correspondía al nombre de un agricultor inglés que había inventado un sistema revolucionario para la siembra en 1701 y que por ello había pasado a ser un hombre histórico. A pesar de que a Ian Anderson no le gusta tener el nombre de una persona que ya ha fallecido, cree que "ya no se puede hacer nada". "Tenía que haber estado más atento en clase de historia para no haber cometido errores como este", ha concluido sarcásticamente el cantante y compositor escocés.

POR JUGAR CON GATOS. IAN ANDERSON SE ROMPE UN DEDO DE SU MANO IZQUIERDA Y PELIGRA SU CONCIERTO EN MÉRIDA. Se puede leer en la web oficial del grupo que el lider de Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson, se rompió un dedo de su mano izquierda hace unas semanas, jugando con uno de sus gatos (Ian Anderson no ha querido revelar si el gato en cuestión era Rupi). Su dedo tendrá que estar inmovilizado (con un vendaje especial) entre 6 y 8 semanas. La gira, de momento, sigue adelante, ya que el sr. Anderson ha modificado su flauta para poder tocarla, pero lo que le será imposible de tocar será la guitarra acustica, instrumento cuyas partes seran interpretadas en los conciertos por Martin Barre y John O´Hara. Esperemos que ésto no devalúe su esperado concierto en el festival Extremusika de Merida, tan esperado por todos nosotros y del que faltan dos semanas para celebrarse. Del gato nunca más se supo...

ENTREVISTA A GLENN CORNICK PUBLICADA EN EL NUMERO 96 (ENERO 2009) EN EL MAGAZINE "A NEW DAY", TRADUCIDA AL CASTELLANO.
Coincidiendo en fecha con la edicion del CD 40 aniversario de "This Was" y el DVD "Their fully authorised story...", en verano de 2008, el bajista original de Jethro Tull, Glenn Cornick, nos llama para decirnos que estará en Inglaterra durante algunos dias, entonces quizas lo convenza para que charle con nosotros y nos dé su opinion sobre dichos discos. Arreglamos una cita, cita que quedó anulada cuando el coche de Dave (Rees) se estropeó. Afortunadamente, Glenn es un entusiasta seguidor de las convenciones de fans de Jethro Tull en todo el mundo, y voló desde su casa, en América, para estar en la convencion de Itullians en Alessandria, Italia, en octubre, su septima convención italiana. Antes de su actuación, AND le acorraló en su camerino, y cayó en la trampa para dejarse entrevistar por nosotros, primera entrevista que le haciamos desde 1996 (AND #52). Como siempre, Glenn se mostró rotundo al expresar sus puntos de vista, los cuales no necesariamente deben ser compartidas pòr todos los musicos y fans de Jethro Tull, pero que tienen un peso importante, ya que él estuvo ahí desde el principio, fué parte importante en el seno de la banda, y aun está muy orgulloso de su contribución musical a la leyenda que Jethro Tull son. Más, debeis tener un poco de respeto por este viejo de 61 años, quien rehuye de hacerse mayor...mirad el tipo que tiene en la foto, parece un pollo con una cresta multicolor...Martin webb.

Empezemos con una fácil...40 años de Jethro Tull, ¿que significa esto para ti?
(RISAS) Significa que soy mucho mas viejo de lo que solía ser...Ummm, aparte de eso, no significa mucho para mi. No es algo que haya seguido a lo largo de los años. Tuve mis años de disfrute con la banda, pero ahora no pienso mucho en ello, realmente. Ni siquiera sigo lo que ahora hacen. Me gusta ver algunos de los chicos que estan o estuvieron en la banda, porque tengo muchos amigos ahí, pero lo que ahora haga Jethro Tull no tiene ningun interes particular para mi. No es mi estilo de musica.
¿Que opinas de la reedición del 40 aniversario de THIS WAS?
Tengo mi opinión sobre THIS WAS. Sé que todos estan celebrando el gran 40 aniversario. Para mi, es como ir a un funeral y escuchar al sacerdote decir "fué un gran hombre, amaba a Dios, y era bueno con los animales", pero no menciona que el tipo abusaba de los niños y pegaba a su esposa. Y esto es lo que consige de mí. Bien, es el 40 aniversario de THIS WAS, pero siempre pensé que es un album horrible, una mierda, y aun sigo pensando eso, 40 años despues. Asi, celebrarlo, para mi es una estupidez. Cuando escucho ése disco ahora, aun suena como la primera vez que lo escuché, las canciones no suenan profesionales, sino hechas de una manera amateur, no estábamos seguros hacia donde nos dirigiamos, y la produccion...sé que sólo nos costó 100 libras producirlo, pero creo que ése dinero se pudo haber gastado de una mejor manera. La interpretación es horrible, tienes a Mick tocando sus tres acordes una y otra vez, me tienes a mí intentando tocar lineas de bajo como si supiera tocarlas al estilo de una big band de los cincuenta, tienes a Ian luchando por encontrar una voz, y tienes a Clive simplemente intentando seguir nuestro ritmo. Asi, nunca sentí que fuera un buen disco. Lo unico que creo que era genial...creo que la portada era fabulosa, quizas la mejor portada de un disco de debut de un grupoo de rock, sobre todo en Europa, donde no aparecia el nombre del grupo impresa en ella. Cuando la gente iba a la tienda de discos, si no sabian quienes éramos, tendian a escoger el disco para echarle un vistazo y averiguar quienes éramos, y esa foto con los perros...pero no averiguaban nuestro nombre, no habia respuesta. Pero en terminos de marketing lo que buscas es algo que haga que la gente se pare y diga "¿que es esto?", y elija el disco. Y una vez que tengan el disco en sus manos hay un cincuenta por ciento de posibilidades de que lo compren. Puedes elegir la otra opción, que es tener una bonita portada y material inteligentemente hecho, pero si no tienen ésa impresión inicial, no funcionará. Y creo que éste fué uno de los puntos algidos para la venta del album. Otra cosa que pienso del disco es que creo que es tan malo que (se rie) hace que STAND UP parezca mucho mejor al compararlos. Y cuando piensas que STAND UP se publicó sólo nueve meses despues, es dificil de creer que lo que suena para mi como una banda de blues amateur en el primer disco tuviera una transición hacia lo que creo fué realmente una banda creativa en tan solo unos meses. Las composiciones de STAND UP fueron geniales, aunque hay algunas cosas que criticaria de éste disco. Bueno, esto es lo que opino, sé que mucha gente no estará de acuerdo conmigo.
Bueno, yo no estoy de acuerdo para nada, no soy musico, pero como oyente...sí, puede que a veces haya un poco de ingenuidad, pero hay frescura y emoción en él, y tambien es como ningun otro disco de Jethro Tull, así que es divertido reproducirlo y escucharlo.
Ah sí, no estoy diciendo que la gente no disfrute con el disco, sólo despotrico sobre mi relación personal con él. Y como digo, nunca me sentí satisfecho con el album desde la primera vez que lo escuché.
¿Estas haciendo auto crítica, poniendo un nivel muy alto?
Posiblemente, quizas haya una parte de esto. Al haber sido parte de ello desde el interior puede que vea lo que otros no ven. Y mirando atras ahora, desgraciadamente, no siento nada de nostalgia por ello, supongo que es lo primero que tendriamos que tener, y nos haría sentir bien, pero solo estaba decepcionado, y aun sigo así. Asi, cuando alguien está alabando lo bueno que fué, bueno, no formaré parte de eso.
Algunas canciones han pasado bien el test del tiempo. Jethro Tull aun interpreta algunas de ellas en los conciertos, como MY SUNDAY FEELING.
Sí, está esa, y quizas tambien A SONG FOR JEFFREY. Pero las canciones no estan completamente formadas. Son como las primeras canciones de un cantaautor. Y luego estan las canciones de blues, que son...ummm...(se rie) lo siento, no me sale ninguna palabra que sea educada¡. Pero siendo serios, honestamente creo ésto, no estoy intentando crear polémica, realmente pienso que es un album terriblemente mediocre.
Es uno de mis favoritos¡
Bueno, eso está bien, no tengo problemas con gente a la que le gusta, ni con gente que tiene una opinión diferente a la mía.
Pero acepto completamente que Jethro Tull rompieron definitivamente con STAND UP, y que cinco discos de blues seguidos hubieran sido demasiado incluso para mí, pero me encanta por ser un reflejo de lo que se hacía en 1968.
Sí,si lo ves en terminos a como sonábamos entonces sobre un escenario, comprendo por qué a la gente le puede gustar. Pero para mí hay demasiados errores en él. Y, como dije antes, no me gustó ni cuando se editó por primera vez. Hay mala interpretación de los temas, mala produccion, no muy buenas canciones...son muchas cosas juntas, y nunca pude con ellas.
¿Has escuchado actualmente la versión reeditada del aniversario?
No me he molestado en escucharlo. Tengo unas seis copias regaladas de diferentes lugares. Le eché un vistazo a la portada...
Me estaba preguntando cual sería tu opinión sobre las mezclas mono y estéreo.
No soy muy consciente de ese material. ¿Es la mezcla mono original?
Estan la mezcla mono original, y una versión estéreo remasterizada.
Ah, bien.
Creo que ambas tienen sus pros y sus contras. La mezcla mono original te llega como...como eso (me pongo las manos justo en medio de la cara para reflejar cómo entiendo que me llega el sonido a mis oídos)...
El sonido mono es precisamente eso. Si piensas en material como los primeros discos de THE ANIMALS , ello sólo podian trabajar con sonido en mono¡. Canciones como HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN, sería un crimen intentar ponerlas en estéreo, sería como si te dieran un puñetazo.
¿Y que opinas sobre los nueve temas incluidos de las sesiones de la BBC de 1968?
¿Estan ahí? ¿en la reedición? ah¡ tendré que abrir uno para escucharlo¡, suena interesante...supongo que ya debería de haberlos oido.
Las actuaciones suenan con mucha fuerza, supongo que es porque en aquella época tocábais ocho dias a la semana.
Si. Aquellas sesiones para la BBC fueron geniales. (Risas) Debo escucharlas y ver como estamos¡. Siempre fué divertido ir a hacer aquellas sesiones. Había dos tipos de sesiones para la BBC. Estaban unas en las que lo haciamos en un pequeño estudio, y luego estaba la otra forma, que era haciendolo delante de publico, que era mucho más divertido. Tenian un pequeño local reconvertido a teatro en Golders Green, al norte de Londres, era muy pequeñito, era algo asi como...levantaban una pared detras de las cinco primeras filas de asientos, así que sólo cabían unas cincuenta personas. Hicimos muchas sesiones allí cuando estuve en Wild Turkey, y realmente lo pasábamos bien. Sé que la BBC realmente no queria hacer aquellos programas, pero fueron obligados por la ley de aquel tiempo, ya que tenian que ofrecer un cierto porcentaje de musica en directo, pero ésto nos trajo grandes actuaciones y muy buena música.
El sólo de batería de Clive en DHARMA FOR ONE sonaba mucho más poderoso que en la versión del disco.
(Se pone a silbar) No le costaría mucho¡ (se rie) y Clive sabe por que. Realmente no es un sólo de batería. Trabajamos bajo circustancias difíciles, porque todo se hacía en cuatro pistas, con la batería y el bajo en una pista. Asi, al mezclarlo era como "¿donde quereis que vayan la bateria y el bajo?" y "¿a que volumen quereis la batería y el bajo?", ya que eramos una sola unidad, la "batería-bajo", no dos instrumentos diferentes. No te daban muchas opciones. Y el estudio Sound Techniques era un viejo granero, todo de paredes de piedra, muy alto, era un lugar imposible para grabar un disco de rock. Pero era fabuloso para los Fairport Convention cando iban allí a grabar sus canciones acústicas, era bonito por eso, porque tenía una resonancia parecida a las iglesias. Pero intentar hacer sólos de guitarra y batería para un grupo de rock´n´roll allí...
¿Cuando viste a Clive por ultima vez?
No lo he vuelto a ver desde que hicimos la gira de reunion de Wild Turkey. Hablo con él cada tres o cuatro meses, quedamos en darnos un toque. Con John Evans no he hablado en decadas, le llamé varias veces, pero no conseguí dar con él. Aun sigue en Australia, parece que le encanta vivir allí.
¿Has visto el DVD del 40 aniversario?
No lo he visto entero, sólo partes de él. Creo que era interesante, todo el mundo parecia muy sincero al dar sus opiniones...
¿Que piensas sobre lo que algunos de los chicos dijeron sobre tí, por ejemplo, que tu estilo de vida de rock star afectó en tus actuaciones en directo con la banda? ¿fué justo?
No, no es justo. Todo lo que tienes que hacer es ver el DVD del festival de la isla de Wight para comprobar que no me afectaba para nada. Creo que entonces estaba en mi mejor momento como músico, y mi época con Jethro Tull estaba llegando a su fin. Pero lo que me molestó fue que me criticaran por ser demasiado "rockero", y luego cuando todos hablan de John Glascock era "Ah, era un tipo estupendo, era tan rockero". él llevó una vida de rock star mucho más intensa que yo, sus hábitos fueron, de lejos, muchos más intensos que los míos, pero todos opinaban que era maravilloso que John fuera "Mister rock´n´roll", sí, tengo que criticarlo. Pero, ya ves, despues de tantos años, no me importa demasiado.
¿Y eres consciente de que Mick (Abrahams) se volvió loco por lo que dijiste sobre él en el DVD?
No tengo en absoluto ningun interes en lo que piense Mick. Conté la verdad, no creo que dijera nada particularmente grosero sobre él.
Lo que le molestó un poco, así lo entendí yo, es la escena donde cuentas cómo el grupo le dejó con su equipo en la puerta de su casa y le dijisteis que no volviera, él no tiene recuerdos de aquello.
Bueno, quizas no se acuerde. Pero todo lo que tienes que hacer es preguntarle a Clive (Bunker) ó Ian, y comprobarás que esa historia es cierta.
Bueno, recientemente volví a revisar esa escena, para preparar el cuestionario de preguntas de ésta entrevista, y lo que no dices realmente es "soltamos a Mick, le tiramos su equipo fuera de la caravana y le dijimos que no volviera más..." pero creo que es así como Mick lo ha interpretado.
Bien, es su punto de vista. No es importante para mi. Pero si se siente mal, que pena.
En la última gira de celebración del 40 aniversario de la banda, Mick y Clive fueron invitados estrellas en varios conciertos. ¿Fuiste invitado?
Fuí invitado a volar a Inglaterra, pagandome el viaje de mi bolsillo, y tocar gratis en algunos conciertos, y entonces, ciertamente, tenía cosas mejores que hacer con mi dinero. Dejémoslo ahí...
Pero ellos tambien tocaron en Los Angeles, donde resides actualmente. Podrias haber salido a tocar con ellos como artista invitado.
Hubo dificultades. Es todo lo que diré.
Er...mi siguiente pregunta era saber cómo estan tus relaciones con Ian en este momento...
Oh, las cosas estan bien, de veras. No veo mucho a los chicos. No son parte de mi vida habitual, por eso, venir a alguna convención y encontrarme con todos es muy reconfortante para mí, no hay ningun problema en eso. Quizas si hubiera personas con las que me paso todo el dia de gira, entonces la cosa sería un poco diferente. Pero en una situacion asi todo es bastante agradable.
Cambiando de Jethro Tull a Wild Turkey, ¿existen aún como grupo?
No, me temo que Wild Turkey ya no existen. Hicimos una gira por Inglaterra y aquello fué muy divertido, más de lo que suponía que a mi edad sería. Pero por alguna razon no hicimos nada de dinero, y así es muy dificil mantener una banda entre California y Swansea. El guitarrista y yo vivimos en Los Angeles, y los otros tipos viven en el Reino Unido, así los costes y la logistica lo hacen imposible.
Pero hubo unas declaraciones tuyas en las que decías que volverías a Inglaterra para algunos conciertos.
(Suspira) Hubo... aún tengo la esperanza de volver a Inglaterra, aunque ésto vuelve a ser un problema logistico importante. Puede que sea posible en los siguientes años. Y en éste punto podrian haber otros Wild Turkey, porque hay potencial para seguir tocando por Europa con el grupo. Pero girar por Inglaterra, realmente tocar en clubs no da mucho dinero. Pero puede ser muy bueno hacer un circuito por Europa con los que yo llamo "los pedos viejos". Cualquier banda de "pedos viejos" que haya tenido un exito moderado en los sesenta o setentas puede reformarse y girar por Europa, y sería fantastico hacerlo. De hecho, Wild Turkey fuimos de lejos mejores cuando nos reformamos que en los viejos dias. Hacia el final de la gira estábamos tocando fantasticamente. Tocabamos mejor, teniamos mejores pintas, realmente lo hicimos todo muy bien. Pero, ya sabes, la economía y otras cosas tambien van juntas en el camino...
¿Aun tocas en Los Angeles?
Raramente. Cada vez que me den una oportunidad para tocar, allí estaré, pero no hay muchas. Allí no hay ahora una escena musical muy buena, sorprendentemente. Parece que Europa dá más opciones que L.A. Ocasionalmente toco en un pub irlandés, pero la escena irlandesa ha decrecido su interes en los ultimos diez años. Fué una escena realmente excitante hace veinte años, pero se volvió muy trillado. Igual que en la era de The Pogues y un poco antes, hubo alguna accion en aquella escena, pero ahora está toda esa musica que llaman "celta", Dios sabe de donde viene pero no es de mi gusto. Asi que no hay mucho allí que me interese musicalmente, y la radio de estos dias refleja eso, esta increiblemente viciado, todo es radio-formula. Oh, excepto un programa que hace, créeme, Steve Jones, el de los Sex Pistols. Hace un estupendo programa en una radio local (Jonesy´s Jukebox en Indie 103) donde el tio pone sólo lo que le apetece, y puede ser cualquier cosa, absolutamente. Puede pinchar cualquier tema oscuro de una banda punk local sin contrato discografico y continuar con una increiblemente empalagosa cancion pop de los sesenta o setenta. Y tiene un estilo de actuar increible, no a la manera usual de los DJ convencionales. Pero e´ste es el unico programa de radio que merece la pena escuchar.
¿Y que música te gusta escuchar estos dias?
Montones de cosas...Recientemente he escuchado a un tipo muy bueno que se llama Neville Staples. ¿Le conoces?
Si, por supuesto. Le ví hace unos años y pensé que era fantastico, aunque nunca fuí fan de los Specials.
Oh, me encanta ese estilo. The Specials, Selecters, The Beat. Me encanta tocar esa música.
¿Echas de menos tocar?
Terriblmente. Estaría tocando todo el tiempo si pudiera. Estaría de gira todo el tiempo que pudiera, bueno, no todo el tiempo, porque tambien echaria de menos a mi familia, pero no hay otra cosa que realmente me guste hacer que tocar. Nunca he estado sujeto a otra cosa. Trabajé con un trabajo normal durante diez años y eso casi me mata, literalmente. Tuve un ataque al corazon. La causa principal fué el tener un trabajo normal. Asi que, sí, me gustaria tocar más.
Y viendo a Glenn sobre el escenario aquella tarde y luego otra vez por la noche no solo recuerda el gran bajista que es, sino tambien confirma lo mucho que disfruta cuando toca en directo. Y si es recordado por su imagen "friki" que tenía cuando estaba en los Tull, lo cierto es que no es nada comparado con la que tiene actualmente en éste 2008. ‘What is a Wommett’ Mick Abrahams

Mick Abrahams has written his autobiography 'What is a Wommet' with a foreword by Bob Harris. It is published by Apex Books. Mick was born in 1943 in the middle of an air raid and, after an uncertain start, was adopted and brought up in Luton. He disliked school, finding solace in music, learning the piano and later guitar, at which he excelled. He was the original guitarist and founder member of Jethro Tull in 1967 leading to the hit album 'This Was' but the different musical styles of Abrahams and Ian Anderson caused a split. He left the band at the end of 1968.
Mick formed Blodwyn Pig. They produced two albums Ahead Rings Out and Getting to This. Both spending several weeks in the UK Top Ten Charts. But after two successful US tours, musical differences surfaced. Abrahams left and the Pig soon disbanded.

He enjoyed success with The Mick Abrahams Band and in solo performances until, disillusionment with the music business, made him quit in the 1970s. He spent several years away from the spotlight.

Now he's busier than ever, writing and recording with Blodwyn Pig and working solo. He has renewed his working relationship with Ian Anderson who played on Mick's 1996 solo album One with special guest appearances at Jethro Tull concerts. Mick lives with his wife Kate and has two grown up sons.

Todo gira en la nostalgia, y ese es el problerma. Puedo escribir canciones, pero realmente no disfruto con la idea. Ya sabes lo que ocurre en un concierto de los Rolling Stones cuando interpretan los temas nuevos "ah, es momento de ir a echar la meadita". Ésto realmente es así y es muy triste."

‘Chinese Democracy’ probablemente se ha convertido en el disco más esperado de la historia del rock de todos los tiempos. Hace 15 años que empezamos a oír hablar de su existencia, de anuncios de lanzamiento, de suspensiones, de fugas de músicos de problemas de management y por supuesto de problemas propios de Axl Rose. Portal Esquizofrenia (Fotos: Dave Garia) Una fiesta como la que Alcorcón celebró el sábado 6, con Jethro Tull, todo un mito del rock progresivo en su vertiente más folk, no podría pasar desapercibida para Portal Esquizofrenia. Así que con cámara en mano y ganas de escuchar a Ian Anderson y compañía nos desplazamos a la localidad madrileña.Lo primero que hay que destacar fue el error que cometimos con los horarios, aunque sin mucha culpa por nuestra parte. Al parecer, los Jethro quisieron tocar antes de la medianoche -debe ser que la edad ya no está para trasnoches o bien que precisamente querían irse luego de juerga, quién sabe… aunque este domingo 7 tocaban en Salamanca-. Así que, a pesar de su condición de cabeza de cartel de la noche, actuaron segundos. Estaba programado que actuaran cerca de las 0 horas, pero saltaron sobre las 22.30, cuando aún el acceso al estadio de fútbol donde tenían lugar todos los conciertos era muy complicada. Y nosotros, claro, estábamos en ella.El concierto de Jethro sonó muy bien. Demasiado bien. Así que terminados sospechando que se ayudaron de pistas pregrabadas porque en algunos momentos era más que visible algún desfase entre los labios de Anderson y la pronunciación de las letras. A eso le unimos un espectacular y extrañísimo sonido para tratarse de un concierto organizado por un ayuntamiento dentro del contexto de unas fiestas populares, no de un concierto preparado por el propio grupo. Pero como sabemos que Anderson, Barre y compañía son unos cracks, no sospechamos demasiado. Hubo dos partes claramente separadas. Una primera en la que Jethro se dedicó a 'homenajear' el título que Alcorcón puso a la noche: 'Noche celta'. Tocaron los temas más bucólicos de su repertorio y desde la cola de acceso al recinto ni siquiera nos parecieron ellos, sospechando que eran Gwendal o el primer telonero, Grupo Lento. Luego, una segunda parte con grandes éxitos. Los más coreados, 'Heavy Horses' y 'Thick as Brick'.En cuanto al público, satisfactoria acogida de público. Pese a que los asistencia estaba condicionada -libre acceso, gratuidad-, había muchos fieles de la banda, sobre todo de mediana y avanzada edad. Mucho heavy y también 'progs' de toda la vida. Las camisetas más vistas fueron las de Pink Floyd-Roger Waters. Parece que hay una conexión entre ambas bandas míticas de los 70. Supuestamente, la conexión de la buena música, como siempre suelo decir.Llamó la atención la presencia de dos chicas absolutamente fans de los Jethro. No sólo coreaban las letras, sino que no dejaban de saltar, agitar las cabezas y mover las manos como si de un concierto de música psicodélica se tratase. Al menos pusieron la nota de color en una noche un poco fría -literalmente porque la temperatura era baja- y con un público fiel escaso. Los incondicionales, eso sí, le dieron alguna alegría a Anderson desde las primeras filas. Para no bajarle la moral, claro.Y vayamos con los músicos. Ian se salió como frontman y showman. No paraba de corretear y sus rápidos cambios de instrumento -guitarra mandolina y flauta- hacían alucinar a los que desconocían su versatilidad. Insisto en que era sospechosa su implacable actuación vocal. Ni un fallo de altura, de afinación, ni una limitación en los tonos altos… sonido demasiado limpio y puro. La flauta también sonaba excesivamente perfecta y la mandolina era empleada con asombrosa sonoridad. Como siempre, sospechar es gratis. Que cada uno piense lo que quiera, pero nuestro deber como informadores es ofrecer todos los datos.Martin Barre se salió a la guitarra. Quizás queda fuera de las sospechas de 'play back' porque es menos necesario en su caso y porque se escuchó en una ocasión un acople importante de audio. Gustó mucho sus momentos rockeros. Correcta actuación del bajista David Goodier y del batería, Doane Perry. A algunos les alucinó que en el momento de su solo y en alguna canción usara el doble bombo y en general, una energía más propia del heavy que de un folk-rock. Para acabar, el teclista John O'Hara, sentado para tocar su instrumento, como si de música clásica se tratara, fue más discreto. Pero sospechoso fue el momento del bonus, en el que no había terminado de sentarse y acomodarse y comenzó a sonar alguna nota…En general, fiestazo para los 'progs' y en especial para los amantes de la música de Jethro. Sobre todo cuando fue gratis y con fácil acceso al concierto. Algo corto, de poco más de una hora y, como decía, sospechosísima gran y limpia sonoridad. Pero da igual, fue un lujazo disfrutar de esta banda mítica en nuestro país
