BENEFIT- A COLLECTOR´S EDITION.
Following the release last year of the 40th anniversary edition of Thick as a Brick, on 28th October Chrysalis Records will release a Collector’s Edition of Jethro Tull’s Benefit album.
Benefit was Jethro Tull’s third album, first released in April 1970. Transcending the blues influences of their 1969 album Stand Up, it was a much more hard-rocking album which saw the band utilise more advanced studio techniques. It reached number 3 in the UK.
The Collector’s Edition of Benefit plus bonus tracks has been mixed by Steven Wilson and approved by Ian Anderson. CD2 is a mono and stereo disc of rare and previously unreleased versions of tracks and singles associated with the period Benefit was released in (more information available on request). The audio only DVD includes a surround sound mix of Benefit, 96/24 tracks of Stereo in UK and US running orders.
In addition, the Collector’s Edition will include a booklet featuring an 8,000 word essay written by Martin Webb, as well as interviews with band members and a selection of photos, some of which are rare and previously unseen.

IAN ANDERSON (PROG GOD 2013) AT THE 2013 PROGRESSIVE MUSIC AWARDS
“Prog is FUN!” began award recipient Ian Anderson last night at the Prog Magazine Awards, held in the quaint majesty of London’s Kew Gardens. The Prog God Award was presented to Ian by Rick Wakeman, last year’s winner of that category. Many of Ian’s chums, Marillion, Steve Hackett and Steven Wilson collected shiny Prog trophies to hang on the wall, impress the neighbours and use for personal defence against intruders. (You don’t actually strike intruders with the heavy object but simply defiantly hold in front of you as, it is said, Prog makes most people run away. Are there any Prog burglars out there?
The Annual Prog Awards were hosted by Gavin Esler, thinking woman’s crumpet. A parsimonious Scot, Mr E was seen to carry his presentation cues and notes in a tattered blue cardboard folder, sporting the Sharpied words, “Prog Awards, 2012? with the last “2? crossed out and replaced with a “3?. Will it be seen again next year? We hope so as the Gavster is a pro and knows how to tease Paxo (fellow strongman presenter Jeremy Paxman) which few would dare to do.
Prog music popularity grows again from strength to strength with a new generation of young fans swelling the ranks and encouraging the welcome appearance of new bands and artists who follow the progressive creed. Prog Magazine did a sterling job in creating the perfect environment for a relaxed and friendly night out. A gentlemanly and timely salute to old and new alike. Next year? Same time? Same place? Don’t forget your sequinned cape and codpiece.

An excerpt from Chapter 5 of Tim Smolko's book Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play. Featuring insights from Ian Anderson and in-depth musical analysis, Smolko discusses the band's influence on popular culture and why many consider Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play to be two of the greatest concept albums in rock history.
Since the 1960s, British progressive rock band Jethro Tull has pushed the technical and compositional boundaries of rock music by infusing its musical output with traditions drawn from classical, folk, jazz, and world music. The release of Thick as a Brick (1972) and A Passion Play (1973) won the group legions of new followers and topped the Billboard charts in the United States, among the most unusual albums ever to do so. Tim Smolko explores the large-scale form, expansive instrumentation, and complex arrangements that characterize these two albums, each composed of one continuous song. Featuring insights from Ian Anderson and in-depth musical analysis, Smolko discusses the band's influence on popular culture and why many consider Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play to be two of the greatest concept albums in rock history.

FRITZ RAU DIES AT 83.- SID BERNSTEIN DIES AT 95.
FRITZ RAU DIES AT 83.
Concert organizer and music mogul Fritz Rau died aged 83 in Kronberg, near Frankfurt. His family said on Tuesday that Rau had passed away the day before.
A few words from Ian Anderson:
My dear friend and long-standing German promoter, Fritz Rau, died aged 83 on Monday 19th August.
Fritz was the one who, along with his co-promoter Horst Lippmann, brought Jethro Tull to Germany for the first time in 1969 at the kind suggestion of Jimi Hendrix. Over the years we played many concerts with Fritz at the helm and only in old age did he relinquish the crown and give up work apart from occasional lecture visits where he spoke warmly, often to an audience of enthusiastic young students, of his life and times.
Dear Fritz – we miss you and will always remember your humour, inspiration and dedication to the live music industry. Always the music fan first and the businessman second. Rest, not in peace, but in the bosom of whatever music they play over there. Jazz bass? Could be time to take it up again.
Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull
Rau was born in 1930 in Pforzheim in southwest Germany. He trained to become a lawyer and briefly worked as one, but his real passion was always music. What's more, Rau's love lay in jazz, blues and pop music, meaning he looked abroad to foreign stars when thinking of setting up a serious business as a concert organizer.
He had begun to dabble in the trade even as a student in Heidelberg, bringing some of the biggest names of the 1950s - Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Ella Fitzgerald - over to Germany.
Together with his friend Horst Lipmann, Rau set up the "Lippmann and Rau" concert agency, a business that was catapulted to the music scene's attention with its organization of the American Folk Blues Festival. The festival toured Europe, starting in 1962. Rau and Lippmann had sought out comparatively underground performers like Bukka White, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon and Sonny Boy Williamson - names they helped establish in Europe.
Over the decades, Rau worked with most of the great names of modern popular music. He brought the Rolling Stones to Germany for their first tour in the country, and set up gigs for Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Miles Davis, Queen, The Who, Tina Turner, Madonna, Eric Clapton, ABBA, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan and many more.
He also dedicated time to promoting and helping German artists like Udo Lindenberg and Peter Maffay. Maffay, a musician with a German "Schlager" - a mixture of soft pop and folk music - background, wrote about Rau for the Frankfurter Rundschau paper when the music mogul turned 80. He recalled one of his biggest chances, when he was allowed to open for the Rolling Stones at Munich's Olympic Stadium in 1982.
"Our playlist was soft. Much too soft for a hot afternoon, for the blood-alcohol level of the audience," Maffay wrote. "First there were boos, then coke bottles were flying - then vegetables and eggs. We played on, dodging the missiles to left and right like boxers. Suddenly, a large man bounded onto the stage, stood in front of us, stretched his arms wide and yelled to the crowd: 'If you're bombarding them, you'll have to bombard me too!'"
Rau retired from public life in 2004 and wrote a book on his life with the stars, called "50 Jahre [years] Backstage."

SID BERNSTEIN DIES AT 95.
Sid Bernstein, who helped import The Beatles, dies at 95.
Sid Bernstein died yesterday. Sid was a visionary who persuaded Shea Stadium that a pop concert could sell out their 55,000 tickets and presented The Beatles in 1965, blazing the way for Jethro Tull to also sell out there in 1976.
TERRY ELLIS.
Sid Bernstein, the soft-spoken impresario whose long career included bringing the Beatles to Carnegie Hall in 1964 and Shea Stadium in 1965, died on Wednesday in Manhattan. He was 95.
Mr. Bernstein had built a varied career by early 1963, when he became fascinated with the Beatles after reading British newspaper coverage of the hysteria that typically erupted at their concerts. He had by then presented a West Coast tour by Tito Puente and concerts by Miles Davis, Judy Garland, Tony Bennett, Nina Simone and Ruth Brown.
But getting the Beatles was not easy. At the General Artists Corporation, where Mr. Bernstein was earning $200 a week booking and promoting concerts, he was unable to stir up any interest among his colleagues, particularly after the agency’s representative in London assured him that the group was strictly a local phenomenon.
Mr. Bernstein persisted, telephoning the Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, at home in Liverpool in March 1963 and proposing they perform at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Epstein found the idea tantalizing but had reservations: the group’s early records, released in the United States on small labels, were getting no airplay and were not selling well, and he had no intention of having the Beatles fail in America.
Mr. Bernstein offered $6,500 for two shows and proposed a date three months away. Mr. Epstein said he would not bring the group to New York before 1964, assuming they had made headway in the American market by then. Paging through his desk calendar, Mr. Bernstein proposed Feb. 12 — a national holiday (Lincoln’s Birthday in those days), when youngsters would be out of school. Mr. Epstein agreed, and Mr. Bernstein quickly booked two shows for that night.
As it turned out, Ed Sullivan had booked the group for three consecutive appearances on his Sunday-night variety show, where they appeared on Feb. 9. Mr. Epstein, meanwhile, persuaded Capitol Records to release the Beatles’ single “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in late December and to commit $40,000 to promoting the group and its album “Meet the Beatles.” (Capitol, the American affiliate of EMI, the band’s British label, had earlier turned down their recordings.) The Carnegie Hall shows sold out quickly.
After his success with the Beatles, Mr. Bernstein presented the Rolling Stones at Carnegie Hall. But complaining that the Stones’ fans were rude to the ushers, stood on the seats and generally made a mess of the stately hall, the Carnegie booking manager banned him from presenting shows there for several years. Instead, Mr. Bernstein presented the Kinks, the Animals and other British bands at the Paramount Theater in Times Square and the Academy of Music downtown.
In October 1964 Mr. Bernstein approached the management of Shea Stadium about a Beatles appearance. Stadium officials doubted that he could sell 55,600 tickets to a pop concert, but he knew better. The show quickly sold out. The Beatles received $180,000 for the show on Aug. 15, 1965; Mr. Bernstein said that after expenses he made a profit of only $6,500.
Mr. Bernstein booked the Beatles for a second Shea Stadium concert on Aug. 23, 1966. But because of the furor over John Lennon’s assertion that the band was more popular than Jesus, and perhaps also because of the fickleness of the teenage audience, thousands of tickets went unsold. The Beatles were fed up with live performances by that point, and when their 1966 North American tour ended, they retired from the stage, deciding to devote themselves instead to recording.
Mr. Bernstein tried to lure them back to Shea Stadium in 1967, reportedly offering them $1 million, but they were making no exceptions.
After the Beatles broke up in 1970, he tried regularly, in vain, to get them to reunite, first with lavish monetary offers and later with the promise that the money they raised would be used for disaster relief or charity.
In September 1976 he took out a full-page advertisement in The New York Times to propose that the Beatles perform, together or separately, in a globally televised concert at which ticketholders would donate food or clothing, to be distributed in impoverished countries.

TULLEDIARIO-JETHRO TULL BREAKING NEWS.
IAN ANDERSON IS PROG GOD 2013.
Prog Magazine is proud to announce that Ian Anderson is to be honoured with the Prog God Award at this year’s Progressive Music Awards. Anderson graces the cover of the next issue or Prog, on sale next Wednesday, August 21, with his most revealing interview ever.
The Prog God Award celebrates the innovators of rock. The people who have inspired generations and have carved a way for others to be at their creative best. There is no one who has pushed the boundaries more than Ian Anderson, who to this day remains immersed in his love for the music.
On winning the award, Anderson commented, “The innocent voyage of restless souls: that’s prog rock. Sometimes bombastic, self-indulgent and worse, it is also an honest, gut-felt reaction to the often simplistic and repetitive nature of much of pop and rock.
“It is, indeed, an honour to receive this illustrious Prog award and dwell in such lofty heights amongst the good and the great of the last forty-plus years. I remain very happy to inhabit the progressive rock world, as both performer and listener.
“And where else could a self-taught, mediocre but extremely loud flute player make a decent living? Not in country and western, I would suppose. But, hey: if the boots fit and the buckskin-fringed coyote crooner calls, then count me in cowboy! Brokeback Mountain could never sound sweeter.”
Jerry Ewing, Editor of Prog Magazine says, “For 45 years Ian has been playing live, and I don’t think I have ever seen two shows the same! It doesn’t matter if its Jethro Tull or Ian on his own – its always magnificent, groundbreaking and captivating. Without him rock would be a very different and lesser place, so to announce him as our Prog God at the same time as he announces a UK tour seems hugely fitting.”
The 2013 Progressive Music Awards takes place on september 3 at Kew Gardens, with Newsnight presenter Gavin Esler as host.
Anderson has also announced a UK tour for 2014 to celebrate the release of his forthcoming solo album. Promising a fusion of folk, prog and metal, Anderson says: “After winning the Grammy for best Hard Rock/Metal album back in 1988, this seems like an opportunity to justify that strange and misplaced accolade with a new album to celebrate the more forceful, full-on rock credentials which are found in many of my songs over the last 45 years. It’s not an end to the acoustic and gentler moments but more of an emphasis on the louder aggressive flute style which marked me out from the earliest days of Jethro Tull.”
Following the great success of his current ‘Thick As A Brick’ tour – including a one-off performance at the iconic Royal Albert Hall – tickets for the 2014 shows are expected to go fast when they go on sale on 4th September.

NOTE FROM IAN ANDERSON.
From Ian Anderson:
"As some of you may know, a new album is in the works for recording in December/Jan with release scheduled at Easter 2014. The first tours to feature this new concept album (no – I am NOT going to tell you title) begin with the UK tour starting late April. Further tours throughout 2014 will feature the new material in a more theatrical setting, once again, together with a selection of The Best Of Jethro Tull. Is this to be an Ian Anderson album or a Jethro Tull album, I hear you ask? Not sure, really, I reply, if somewhat evasively….
But I wrote the music in January and did the demos in February and it just requires a few tweaks by my old chum, lyricist Gerald B to have it all locked down and ready for rehearsal beginning 25th November at 10.00 sharp.
It is set in a more aggressive style than the TAAB2 record. Much less acoustic guitar from me and more flute and heavier guitar sounds. Folk-Prog-Metal, you might say, if you were desperately searching for a descriptive term. There are lots of dynamics and varied tempos and keys throughout its lengthy 55 mins. But since it was demoed all on acoustic guitar in a Barbados hotel room, it doesn’t quite sound like that at the moment. But trust me! I know exactly what I am doing."

MICK ABRAHAMS-CAT SQUIRREL BLUES-Review
MICK ABRAHAMS-CAT SQUIRREL BLUE-Review.
2 CD
Secret Records SECDD067
Released: May 13, 2013

Mick Abrahams, Jethro Tull guitarist for a short period of time (he only participated in the band's first album, This Was, and some later singles), is back with the release of a double CD titled Squirrel Cat Blues ( Secret Records).
Abrahams always moved by the sounds of traditional American blues (that was one of the triggers of his departure from Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson wanted to give it another musical direction to the band that Abrahams did not accept), and had an big success in the 70s with Blodwyn Pig or with solo albums.
What this double CD offers is a series of blues songs (some of his own, most cover versions from american or british bluesmen) collected from his tour in the years 2003/2004.
The first CD is a collection of acoustic versions of masters like Leroy Car or Brownie McGhee, where we can find gems like So Much Trouble (Ian Anderson played this in numerous occasions) or Jesus On The Mainline, song that Abrahams recorded along Ian Anderson and that was included in the álbum One.
The second CD is an electric set with his new band, which revisits classic blues numbers, from Alexis Corner (I Wonder Who) to Doctor Isaiah Ross (Cat Squirrel, Jethro Tull classic included in their first album, This Was, 1968).
Mick Abrahams is a great guitarist, but what he really does very well is to play blues masterfully, style which he has always moved with a select discography, both with Blodwyn Pig and the Mick Abrahams Band.
So, it is a very nice double album and a must for any Jethro Tull fan.

AROUND THE WORLD LIVE-REVIEW
JETHRO TULL-AROUND THE WORLD LIVE-REVIEW.

Mountains Come Out of the Sky: The Illustrated History of Prog Rock-
Mountains Come Out of the Sky: The Illustrated History of Prog Rock
By Will Romano
From its artful beginnings (Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, the Mothers of Invention, and those progressive forebearers, the Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles), through the towering guitar solos, monumental synthesizer banks, and mind-boggling special effects of the Golden Age of Prog (Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, UK), through the radio-friendly pop era (Asia, the Phil Collins-led Genesis, and a reformed Yes), and right up to the present state of the art (Marillion, Spock's Beard, and Mars Volta), this is a wickedly incisive tour of rock music at its most spectacular. This is indeed the book prog rock fans have been waiting for, the only one of its kind, as fantastic as the subjects it covers.
Por Will Romano
