"A NEW DAY" MAGAZINE #108 OUT NOW.
Ya tenemos en nuestras manos el número 108 del magazíne sobre Jethro Tull que edita desde 1985 Dave Rees.
La revista viene cargada de interesantísimas noticias, críticas de discos, etc. que, de modo resumido, os contaré.
Para empezar, Ian Anderson nos informa, a traves de su web oficial, actualizada al mes de Julio, y reproducida en el magazíne, de nuevos lanzamientos discográficos de Jethro Tull al mercado.
1º-El álbum BENEFIT (1970), se reeditará el próximo mes de Octubre, en una nueva edición especial de 2 discos, con temas extras y una nueva remasterización (también en glorioso sonido 5.1) a cargo de Steven Wilson, quien ya remasterizó las recientes ediciones especiales de Thick As A Brick y Aqualung.
2º-A PASSION PLAY será reeditado (Edición Colecccionistas de 2 Cds) a principios de 2014. La reedición llega con un nuevo remaster y una nueva remezcla en 5.1 a cargo de Steven Wilson e incluirá las famosas cintas conocidas como Chateau D´Isaster. O sea, Passion Play tal como fué engendrado en 1973 por su autor.
3º-Como ya comentamos en el blog, Anderson sigue trabajando en un nuevo disco que verá la luz entre primavera y verano de 2014. Sin noticias aún de título ó si será un album de Jethro Tull ó otro disco firmado por Ian Anderson. Lo que sí parece claro es que volverá a ser un nuevo álbum concepto con letras de Gereald Bostock.
4º-Dave Rees nos informa que tiene noticias de que Anderson y John O´Hara están trabajando juntos en un disco con versiones de Jethro Tull adaptadas para un cuarteto de cuerda.
La revista contiene una extensa entrevista con el actual teclista de Ian Anderson, el señor John O´Hara, que es acribillado a preguntas por Martin Webb.
En la sección de críticas de conciertos podreis leer los artículos sobre los conciertos de Ian Anderson en Villafranca Di Verona, Italia, en junio de 2013, y la actuación del grupo en el Royal Albert Hall londinense del 30 de Junio de 2013.

Para acabar, el señor Rees nos habla de la inminente salida del número 109 en los que habrá más críticas de discos, el nuevo trabajo de Martin Barre, criticas de conciertos (Anna Phoebe live) y unas páginas dedicadas a la reciente Convención de Tullianos celebrada en Gavá, Barcelona, el pasado mes de Julio.

The magazine is full of interesting news, reviews, interviews, etc.. that, in summary, I will tell you here.
First, Ian Anderson tells us, through their updated official website, , and reproduced in the magazine,  that  there wil be new Jethro Tull releases in the coming months.
1-The album BENEFIT (1970), will be released next  October, in a new special collector´s edition 2 disc, with bonus tracks and a new remaster (also in glorious 5.1 sound) by Steven Wilson, who has remastered the recent special editions of Thick As A Brick and Aqualung.
2 º-A PASSION PLAY will be released (Special Collector´s Edition 2 Cds) in early 2014. The reissue comes with a new remaster and a new 5.1 remix by Steven Wilson and include the famous tapes known as Chateau D'Isaster. In other words,  Passion Play as it was conceived in 1973 by Ian Anderson.
3 º-As we discussed on the blog, Anderson is working on a new album that will be released in spring or summer 2014. No news about title or if it's a Jethro Tull album or anotherIan Anderson solo album. What does seem clear is that it will be a new concept album  with lyrics written by Gereald Bostock.
4 º-Dave Rees tells  that  he have news that Anderson and John O'Hara are working together on an album with Jethro Tull versions adapted for a string quartet.
The magazine contains a lengthy interview with the current keyboardist, Mr. John O'Hara, which is riddled with questions by Martin Webb.
In the concert reviews section you can read articles on Ian Anderson concert in Villafranca di Verona, Italy, in June 2013, and the group's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London from June 30, 2013.
In CDs & DVDs reviews section you can read  the reviews of John Carter new CD (Not Completely Accurate) and Jethro Tull new 4DVD Box Set (Around The World Live).

To conclude, Mr Rees talks that a new issue (109) will be out very soon containing  CDs reviews, Anna Phoebe live, full details plus review of Martin Barre´s new CD, and a report from the recent Tullianos Convention in Barcelona.

Rex edged out Creedence Clearwater Revival in one of the closest battles in UCR Hall of Fame history in round one, then squeaked by Alice Cooper in the semifinals to arrive here. Jethro Tull earned their spot by defeating the Allman Brothers Band and then Neil Young.

"As some of you may know, a new album is in the works for recording in December/Jan with release scheduled at Easter 2014. The first tours to feature this new concept album (no – I am NOT going to tell you title) begin with the UK tour starting late April. Further tours throughout 2014 will feature the new material in a more theatrical setting, once again, together with a selection of The Best Of Jethro Tull. Is this to be an Ian Anderson album or a Jethro Tull album, I hear you ask? Not sure, really, I reply, if somewhat evasively….

But I wrote the music in January and did the demos in February and it just requires a few tweaks by my old chum, lyricist Gerald B to have it all locked down and ready for rehearsal beginning 25th November at 10.00 sharp.

It is set in a more aggressive style than the TAAB2 record. Much less acoustic guitar from me and more flute and heavier guitar sounds. Folk-Prog-Metal, you might say, if you were desperately searching for a descriptive term. There are lots of dynamics and varied tempos and keys throughout its lengthy 55 mins. But since it was demoed all on acoustic guitar in a Barbados hotel room, it doesn’t quite sound like that at the moment. But trust me! I know exactly what I am doing."

"Como muchos de vosotros ya sabreis, estoy trabajando en un nuevo álbum que grabaremos entre Diciembre y Enero para poder publicarlo en Pascua de 2014. La primera Gira que incluirá éste nuevo álbum concepto (no-no voy a deciros el título) comenzará en el Reino Unido allá por el mes de Abril. Los conciertos que seguiran a esta Gira incluiran el nuevo material de una manera más teatral, una vez más, junto con una selección de los mejores temas de Jethro Tull. ¿Será un álbum de Ian Anderson ó un nuevo disco de Jethro Tull (se preguntareis)?. No estoy seguro, realmente, os contesto de manera evasiva...

Pero escribí la musica en Enero e hice las demos en Febrero y solo requiere unos ajustes de mi viejo amigo, el letrista Gerald B para empezar los ensayos el 25 de Noviembre a las 10 en punto.

Los temas estan en un modo más agresivo que en el disco TAAB2. Mucha menos guitarra acústica por mi parte y mucha más flauta y un sonido de guitarra mas heavy. Folk-Prog-Metal, podeis llamarlo, si estais buscando desesperadamente un modo de definirlo. Hay un monton de dinamicas y tempos variados a lo largo de sus más de 55 minutos de duración. Pero desde que grabé las demos con una guitarra acústica en una habitación de hotel en Barbados, el sonido ha variado mucho. Pero creedme. Sé perfectamente lo que hago".

JETHRO TULL & IAN ANDERSON NOMINATED IN 2013 PROGRESIVE MUSIC AWARDS.
Jethro Tull’s 40th Anniversary reissue of the 1972 classic ‘Thick As A Brick’ has been nominated in the ‘Grand Design‘ category in the 2013 Progressive Music Awards. Ian Anderson has also been nominated in the ‘Live Event‘ category for his recent ‘Thick As A Brick’ show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. JETHRO TULL-"SONGS FROM THE COLISEUM"- Live at the Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle, WA, March 3, 1977.
This is an excellent  audience recording from the concert that Tull did in Seattle as a part of the Songs From The Wood Tour in 1977.
The sound is awesome and the band were in very good form. A very welcome addition to the Jethro Tull Bootleg Universe.

In 1991 Jethro Tull released a 2CDs Single for collectors as a promo of the new LP titled Catfish Rising. It included the song Rocks On The Road (single versión) among others tracks taken from the WMMR Radio sessions in Philadelphia, in 1991. The first CD contains a very rare home demo version from 1981 of the song Jack-A-Lynn.

Mick Abrahams, guitarrista de Jethro Tull durante un corto periodo de tiempo (sólo participó en el primer álbum de la banda, This Was, y algunos singles posteriores), vuelve a estar de actualidad discográfica tras la publicación de un doble CD titulado Cat Squirrel Blues, a traves del sello Secret Records.
Abrahams siempre se movió por los sonidos del blues americano tradicional (ese fué uno de los detonantes de su marcha de Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson quería darle otra dirección musical a la banda que Abrahams no aceptaba), y tuvo un considerable éxito en los años setenta con su banda Blodwyn Pig ó con sus discos en solitario.
Lo que éste doble CD nos ofrece es una serie de canciones de blues (algunas de su propia cosecha, la mayoría versiones de bluesmen américanos ó británicos) recogidos de su gira de los años 2003/2004.
El primer CD es una compilación de versiones acústicas de maestros como Brownie McGhee ó Leroy Carr donde nos encontramos joyas como So Much Trouble (versionada en numerosas ocasiones por la banda de Ian Anderson) ó Jesus On The Mainline, tema que ya grabó, acompañado de Anderson, para su álbum de blues acústico One.
El segundo CD es un set eléctrico acompañado de banda, donde versiona clásicos de blues  desde Alexis Corner (I Wonder Who) hasta Isaiah Doctor Ross (Cat Squirrel, tema que Jethro Tull incluyeron en su primer álbum, This Was, de 1968).
Mick Abrahams es un gran guitarrista, pero lo que verdaderamente hace con maestría es tocar blues, estilo por donde siempre se ha movido su selecta discografía, tanto con Blodwyn Pig como con la Mick Abrahams Band.
En definitiva, un doble álbum muy agradable y un deber para todo aficionado al universo Tull.

Mick Abrahams, Jethro Tull guitarist  for a short period of time (he only participated in the band's first album, This Was, and some later singles), is back with the release of a double CD titled Squirrel Cat Blues ( Secret Records).
Abrahams always moved by the sounds of traditional American blues (that was one of the triggers of his departure from Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson wanted to give it another musical direction  to the band that Abrahams did not accept), and had an big success in the 70s with Blodwyn Pig or with solo albums.
What this double CD offers is a series of blues songs (some of his own, most cover versions from american or british bluesmen) collected from his tour in the years 2003/2004.
The first CD is a collection of acoustic versions of masters like Leroy Car or Brownie McGhee, where we can find gems like So Much Trouble (Ian Anderson played this in numerous occasions) or Jesus On The Mainline, song that Abrahams recorded along Ian Anderson and that was included in the álbum One.
The second CD is an electric set with his new band, which revisits classic blues numbers, from Alexis Corner (I Wonder Who) to Doctor Isaiah Ross (Cat Squirrel, Jethro Tull classic included in their first album, This Was, 1968).
Mick Abrahams is a great guitarist, but what he really does very well is  to play blues masterfully, style which he has always moved with a select discography, both with Blodwyn Pig and the Mick Abrahams Band.
So, it is a very nice double album and a must for any Jethro Tull fan.

Around the world live es el esperadísimo box set de 4 DVDs publicado por Eagle Vision el pasado 11 de Junio. Jethro Tull no ha sido una banda muy proclive a lanzar DVDs a lo largo de su carrera [como díce Ian Anderson en el extenso libreto que acompaña a la caja "siempre nos molestaron las cámaras en nuestros conciertos y a veces solo autorizabamos a grabar tres o cuatro temas, y ademas nuestro manager solia opinar que era mejor no salir mucho en televisión para no desgastar mucho nuestra imagen y de esta manera conseguir vender mas tickets para nuestros conciertos"] y los fans siempre nos hemos tenido que contentar con los famosos DVDs piratas que circulan por ahí.
Lo que en este box set se nos ofrece es precisamente eso, la recopilacion de numerosos conciertos que desde un primer momento han estado disponibles de manera no oficial para todos los seguidores de la banda de Ian Anderson. Eagle Vision ha terminado de rellenar el producto con una serie de grabaciones ya publicadas anteriormente por ellos mismos [Live at the Isle Of Wight, Live at Montreux 2003, Living with the Past, o Live in Germany 70/93].

La presentación es excelente, una especie de libro con tapa dura con el libreto en medio de los cuatro DVDs, el lomo podría pasar en tu biblioteca por una nueva biografia sobre la banda. Y el extenso libreto interior, escrito por Joel McIver en marzo de 2013 (www.joelmciver.co.uk) explica cada concierto incluido con entrevistas a Anderson extraídas de diferentes fuentes (Acoustic Magazine, Songfacts, etc.).
Sin embargo, hay un error mayúsculo en el tercer disco. El tema My Sunday Feeling, segun la contraportada, está grabado en Leamington Spa, Inglaterra, en 2001, y se acredita en el folleto a la formación Anderson/Bunker/Abrahams/Cornick. Es, sin duda, la reunión que la formacion original de Jethro Tull hizo para el DVD de 2001 Living With The Past, también editado por Eagle Vision. Pero cuando ves las imagenes lo que se nos muestra es la version de ese mismo tema que los Tull grabaron en 2001 en el Hammersmith de Londres y que tambien se incluyó en aquel Living With The Past. Un error grave.
Bien, en lo que respecta a las grabaciones incluidas en el box set, para mí las verdaderas joyas de la corona son el concierto en Santiago de Chile en 1996 y el especial para la televisión holandesa Hilversum 1999. Ambas grabaciones han estado disponibles en DVDs piratas para todos los fans de la banda desde hace tiempo (yo los tengo) pero lo que aquí se nos ofrece es una excelente calidad de imagen, casi HD, y de sonido, muy por encima de la calidad de los mencionados DVDs piratas.

Mi desilusión personal ha llegado con los conciertos que con más interes esperaba. Se tratan del concierto en Tampa, Florida, en 1976, y el de Munich de 1980. Ambas grabaciones son ya archiconocidas para cualquier hardcore fan de Tull, pero esperaba que, al publicarse de manera oficial, la calidad de imagen fuese excelente o HD. Sin embargo, ninguna de las dos grabaciones mejora las versiones en bootlegs que todos tenemos. Eagle Vision se ha limitado a publicarlas sin ninguna remasterización de ningun tipo.
Tampa 1976, como explica Anderson, fue grabado de manera ilegal por el director de video que operaba aquel  dia en el estadio. Grabó una copia para uso personal y al cabo de los años lo vendió a alguien anonimo por mucho dinero. La mezcla de audio y video llegaba en una sola pista al tipo de la sala de control, quien hizo la copia ilegal en VHS. Es por eso que no se haya podido mejorar la imagen o el sonido.
Munich 1980 fue grabado para una televisión local, y Anderson cree que posiblemente nunca se haya visionado en su totalidad por televisión. Un punto a favor de éste concierto es que la entrevista incluida, con audio original en alemán, viene con diferentes subtitulos, entre ellos el español, cosa del que no disponíamos en las grabaciones bootlegs. Pero la calidad de imagen no es buena.

La otra buena noticia del box set es la inclusión completa del concierto que Jethro Tull celebró en el Estival Jazz de Lugano, Suiza, en 2005, con excelente calidad de audio y video, y la entrevista que Anderson hizo para el programa 2 Meter Sessies de la televisión holandesa en 1999, también con subtítulos en español.
Hubiese sido interesante que Eagle Vision hubiera incluido mas material inédito en vez del material ya publicado con anterioridad que aquí se nos ofrece como relleno. Quizas en el futuro nos deleiten con un segundo box set. Se me ocurren muchas grabaciones inéditas de manera oficial que podrían incluirse (Tanglewood 1970, Hippodrome 1977, Roma 1982, Berlin 1985, Sao Paulo 1988, Estanbul 1991, Ankara 1992...). Quien sabe lo que nos depara el futuro, ¿verdad?.

 "Crest Of The Past" es un Bootleg DVD que incluye diversas actuaciones de Jethro Tull a lo largo de los años y que han sido retransmitidos por televisiónes de diferentes países como Alemania, Venezuela ó Argentina. Incluye entrevistas dobladas ó subtituladas al castellano. La calidad de imagen es muy buena, y a veces excelente.
"Crest Of The Past" is a Bootleg DVD that includes several performances by Jethro Tull over the years that have been broadcasted by TVs from different countries like Germany, Venezuela or Argentina. Includes interviews subtitled or dubbed into Spanish. The picture quality is very good, sometimes excellent.

"Rare And Precious Songs" es un fantástico DVD Bootleg donde se recogen las diversas actuaciones que Jethro Tull ha ido ofreciendo desde 1987 hasta 2004 por multitud de programas de televisión de muchos países.
Aquí podreis ver la aparición que el grupo hizo en la MTV en 1987, así como diversas apariciones en el programa Friday Night de la cadena norteamericana NBC, ó la magnífica actuación que Ian Anderson y sus chicos hicieron en el año 1999 para el programa Two Meter Sessies de la RTL Dutch TV.
En definitiva un muy buen DVD que hará las delicias de todos los fans de Jethro Tull.

"Rare And Precious Songs" is a great DVD Bootleg which sets out the various appearances that Jethro Tull has been offering since 1987 to 2004 for many television channels in many countries.
Here you could see the appearance that the group did on MTV in 1987, and various appearances on  the NBC Friday Night Show , or the magnificent performance that Ian Anderson and his guys did in the year 1999 for Two Meter Sessies porgram in the Dutch RTL TV.
All in all it´s a very good DVD that all Jethro Tull hardcore fans will enjoy.

The Amazing World Of Prog es un doble CD recien editado por el sello italiano Aerostella y que recoge actuaciones de los grupos y solistas que participaron en el Festival Prog Exhibition que se celebró en el Teatro Tendastrisce de Roma, Italia, los años 2010 y 2011. Lo que hace realmente interesante éste CD es la participación de Ian Anderson (representado en tres temas) y Martin Barre.
Anderson se unió al grupo Prog italiano PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) para interpretar Boureé, My God y La Carroza Di Hans, composición de la banda italiana.
Realmente interesante la inclusión del tema Aqualung a cargo de Martin Barre, quien se une para tal empeño con la banda Biglietto Per L´Inferno.
Otros héroes del Prog Rock que participaron en aquel Festival son Steve Hackett, Thijs Van Leer, Richard Sinclair, Mel Collins ó otro ex-componente Tull, Maartin Allcock, quien se une a la banda OAK para interpretar Murfastlart y Baba Gaia.

The Amazing World Of Prog is a double CD recently released by the Italian label Aerostella and it includes performances by bands and singers who participated in the Prog Exhibition Festival held at the Teatro Tendastrisce of Rome, Italy,  in 2010 and 2011. What makes this CD really interesting is the participation of Ian Anderson (here represented with three songs) and Martin Barre.
Anderson joined the italian Prog band PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) performing Bouree, My God and La Carroza Di Hans, an PFM composition.
Really interesting is the track Aqualung by Martin Barre, who joins to the band Biglietto Per L'Inferno.

CLIVE BUNKER EN LA CONVENCIÓN TULLIANA.
Según nos informa Albert Villanueva, presidente de Tullianos, la Asociación de Seguidores de Jethro Tull en España, Clive Bunker se unirá al cartel de artistas que participarán en la próxima Convención Tulliana, la número 11, que se celebrará el 6 de Julio en el Auditorio Marc Grau de Gavá, Barcelona.
Así, Bunker, quien estuvo como batería en Jethro Tull desde los años 1968 hasta 1971, grabando los discos This Was, Stand Up y Aqualung (amén de un sinfín de singles que tuvieron una posterior cabida en el doble álbum Living In The Past, editado en 1972), formará equipo con Martin Barre y su nueva banda, los New Day, la violinista Judith Mateo, el flautista Fernando Ponce De León ó el bajista (ex-Tull) Jonathan Noyce.

 Albert Villanueva, president of Tullianos,  informs  to us the following: Clive Bunker will join the lineup of artists who will participate in the next  Spanish Tull Convention, XI Edition,  to be held on July 6 at the Auditorium Marc Grau in Gavá, Barcelona.
So, Bunker, who was in Jethro Tull as a drummer from the years 1968-1971, recording the LPs This Was, Stand Up and Aqualung (plus countless singles that took place in the subsequent double album Living In The Past, released in 1972), will team up with Martin Barre´s New Day, violinist Judith Mateo, flutist Fernando Ponce De Leon and bassist (ex-Tull) Jonathan Noyce.

JETHRO TULL´S IAN ANDERSON TAAB 1&2 SHOW IN ICELAND TV.
Ian Anderson sigue su Gira triunfante por todo el mundo interpretando los álbumes Thick As A Brick 1 y 2 al completo. Nos llegan noticias de que sus conciertos en Islandia, celebrados los días 7, 8 y 9 de Junio han sido grabados por la cadena islandesa RÚV para su retransmisión por televisión. Así mismo, sabemos que la actuación que la banda hizo en el pasado Festival de Montreux también fué grabado de manera profesional. Esperemos disfrutar pronto de ámbas grabaciones, bien de manera oficial, bien a traves de bootlegs.

Ian Anderson continues his triumphant tour all over the world performing the albums Thick As A Brick 1 and 2 complete. We hear of their concerts in Iceland, held on 7, 8 and 9 June have been recorded by Icelandic TV Channel RÚV for TV broadcasting. Also, we know that the concert that the band did in the past Montreux Festival was also professionally recorded. Hopefully soon enjoy both recordings, either officially, either through bootlegs.

Scott Hammond (Bristol, 1973), es el actual baterista que Ian Anderson está utilizando para su exitosa Gira de Thick As A Brick  1 & 2. Hammond intenta hacer olvidar el fantástico trabajo que hacía a las baquetas Doane Perry, quien estuvo en Jethro Tull desde 1984, y es curioso que empezara su incursión en la música tocando el piano, instrumento que abandonó para tocar la batería en su primer grupo Half Decent. Actualmente Hammond complementa su trabajo en la banda de Ian Anderson con su proyecto The Scott Hammond Quartet, con quienes gira por Reino Unido cuando su apretada agenda se lo permite.
David Lopez, colaborador de éste blog, ha conseguido entrevistarle en exclusiva para su portal MIUSYK.COM, y tal como hiciera con las anteriores entrevistas a Florian Opahle y Ryan O´Donnell, ha querido compartir su exclusividad con nosotros para que todos los lectores de Aqualung My God disfruten de ella con su lectura.

Tras haber entrevistado al guitarra, Florian Opahle, y al cantante, Ryan O’Donell, de la banda que acompaña a Ian Anderson en esta gira, la próxima parada era lógica. Scott Hammond, batería del grupo, se recupera de una lesión en la rodilla y tuvo a bien, tras meses de gira, responder a nuestra entrevista. Podéis leer lo que nos contó en la noticia extendida.
-Ante todo gracias por responder a esta entrevista. Tras leer tu biografía en tu web dedujimos que eras una especie de “piano man” hasta que decidiste cambiarte a la batería cuando cumpliste catorce años. ¿Qué recuerdas de este cambio de instrumento y por qué decidiste cambiar?
Gracias a ti.Tocaba el piano y la guitarra cuando estaba cerca de cumplir los catorce pero no supe qué instrumento iba a ser “el mío” hasta finales de mi adolescencia. En realidad no he vuelto a tocar la guitarra pero de vez en cuando toco el piano pero no en público.
-¿Cómo fue tu aprendizaje con Dave Hassell durante aquellos tres años? ¿Crees que ahí forjaste los pilares de tu actual forma de tocar la batería?
Dave fue un profesor fantástico y creo que tuve mucha suerte de haber aprendido tanto de él. Todavía necesito practicar algunas cosas que aprendí con él. También tuve a otro gran profesor de batería en mis comienzos, Colin Aldridge, que me ayudó a comentar con todo esto. Un buen profesor vale su peso en oro.

-Has grabado con los mejores artistas del panorama internacional como Bruce Dickinson, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Greg Lake o Justin Hayward. ¿Grabar con ellos fue como un sueño hecho realidad para ti? ¿Qué artista fue el más impresionante para ti?
Me encanta trabajar con un montón de gente diferente y tocar distintos estilos de música pero recientemente no he tenido demasiado tiempo para hacerlo debida a la agenda de conciertos con Ian. Bruce Dickinson es un tío encantador y fue muy divertido tocar con él.
-Una gran mayoría te conoce principalmente por tu trabajo con Ian Anderson. ¿Cuando y cómo le conociste?
Conocía a Dave Goodier, bajista, desde hacía mucho tiempo porque es de Bristol, mi vecindario. Me dijo, como hace unos tres años, que Ian estaba buscando a un batería así que fui a la prueba de sonido de Tull en el Bristol´s Colston Hall y estuve hablando con ellos de las fechas de conciertos que tenían con Ian. Tras esto fui a una especie de audición, durante una prueba de sonido de Tull, en el Sheffield City Hal. Creo que sólo tuve que tocar cuatro canciones. Días más tarde me llamó Ian para decirme que estaba contratado. ¡Buenas noticias!
-Bandas como Deep Purple, entre otras muchas, son las que citas como tus influencias pero…¿eras fan de Jethro Tull antes de entrar en la banda de Ian?
Sí, lo era. Tenía tres discos. Uno era Thick as a brick que, curiosamente, no había escuchado demasiado y ahora lo tengo que tocar entero cada noche. Mi disco favorito era, y todavía es, Minstrel in the Gallery.
-Comentando tu trabajo con otros fans de Ian Anderson hemos llegado a la conclusión de que para algunos eres un gran batería pero para otros, como yo, eres como el punto medio entre la fuerza de Barriemore Barlow y la técnica de Doane Perry. ¿Qué piensas de esto?
Tengo un enorme respeto por Barriemore Barlow y por Doane Perry. Ambos son baterías increíbles y muy diferentes. Creo que también soy diferente a ellos pero he aprendido mucho escuchando sus grabaciones con Ian. He “robado” mucho de ellos y lo seguiré haciendo . Intenté mantener la esencia del estilo de Barriemore cuando grabó TAAB pero inevitablemente, y sobre todo en directo, es mi propio estilo el que sale a la luz.
-También grabaste TAAB2. Estar en el estudio con Ian debe ser una experiencia muy interesante y este disco se suponía que iba a ser, y de hecho lo es, uno de los más importantes de su carrera. Florian nos comentó que Ian ve toda la canción fácilmente en términos de melodía y arreglos pero tú, como batería, quizás veas esto de otra manera. ¿Qué fue lo más difícil para ti durante esta grabación y cómo lograste llevarlo a cabo?
Siempre hay presión para hacer el trabajo rápido y dentro del plazo que se nos impone. Esta presión va disminuyendo a medida que vamos por delante del esquema preestablecido. El proceso en su totalidad fue maravilloso y creo que todos estábamos muy contentos con el resultado final. Trabajamos durante muchísimas horas y todos terminamos muy cansados. Todos llegamos a quedarnos dormidos en el suelo alguna vez, incluso Ian (¡no durante una canción por supuesto!).
-¿Eráis conscientes de que estabais grabando semejante obra maestra?
Yo sí sabía que iba a ser un disco muy importante tras el éxito de TAAB1 pero también sabía que Ian no estaba intentando hacer más de lo mismo. El disco tiene su propio feeling pero siempre con la vista puesta en TAAB1.
-Hacer giras es muy importante para Ian y su agenda siempre está llena de conciertos. ¿Cómo fue para ti pasar de tus giras anteriores a tocar por todo el mundo?
Ha sido un enorme cambio en mi forma de vida. Antes hacía muchos conciertos en mi ciudad y a veces tenía que conducir algunas horas, o mucho menos, para otro concierto, de hecho sólo había cogido un avión dos veces en toda mi vida antes de entrar en el grupo. Entonces, de repente, estoy viajando por todo el mundo y tengo la oportunidad de conocer mucho más. A menudo sólo vemos el aeropuerto, el hotel y el sitio donde tocamos pero también tenemos la oportunidad de explorar el centro de la ciudad o donde sea que estemos. Es fantástico tocar con las mismas personas cada noche y conocer el setlist a la perfección. Trabajamos muy bien juntos, como un equipo y estamos acostumbrados a la forma de tocar de cada uno. También puede ser duro estar lejos de tu familia pero afortunadamente nunca estamos fuera del país más de algunas semanas.
-Los conciertos tienen dos partes y durante la primera de las mismas tu trabajo es agotador. Ryan nos comentó que es como un ciclón de cuarenta y cinco minutos. ¿Cómo te preparas físicamente para esto y qué trucos usas para no perder la concentración? ¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de esta primera mitad?

Antes de cada gira toco el show entero en casa para recordarlo todo. En realidad no tengo ningún truco, sólo intento centrarme en lo que hago. Conocemos el material muy bien y si alguien comete un error podemos corregirlo sin problemas. No tengo ninguna parte favorita de TAAB1 pero hay muchas que disfruto por distintas razones. Me encanta “Banker bets” y “Kismet” de TAAB2.
-Sueles estar muy concentrado en tu instrumento pero ¿llegas a sentir el ruido del público en algunas partes del show? ¿Crees que hay alguna diferencia cuando tocas en un país de habla hispana a cuando lo haces en otro país?
No oigo al público tanto como la gente se cree ya que llevo los monitores en el oído así que por favor, gritad mucho más fuerte tras el solo de batería, gracias. Ver al público disfrutando hace que el grupo toque mejor. La gente en Hispanoamérica son los mejores y en Estados Unidos también.
-Estuviste tocando en España en febrero y el primer concierto de esa mini-gira, celebrado en el Palau de la Música, fue horrible. Ian ha hecho este comentario y Ryan indicó que se le olvidaron algunos versos y que el edificio no es el mejor para el rock. ¿Recuerdas algo de ese concierto en particular? ¿Quizás sobre el resto del tour por España o Hispanoamérica?
Creo que fue el primer concierto de la gira y que no habíamos tocado juntos desde hacía mucho tiempo por eso el concierto no fue el mejor pero el segundo sí lo fie. El sonido en Barcelona nos dio muchos problemas por la acústica del lugar aunque era un sitio precioso.
-Ian ya ha comentado que grabará un nuevo disco de rock progresivo en noviembre y que se editará en 2014. ¿Has escuchado ya algún tema? ¿Vas a formar parte de la grabación?
No puedo hacer comentarios al respecto.
-Parece que Ian tocará algunos temas “raros” de Jethro Tull en la gira de la banda a finales de año. ¿Habéis comenzado a ensayar estas canciones? ¿Qué canción te gustaría tocar?
Sí, hemos ensayado algunos de los temas más antiguos del grupo. Me encantaría tocar “Songs from the wood” ya que es muy interesante debido a la parte de la batería.
-Dejando a un lado tu trabajo con Ian Anderson, también tocas con The Scott Hammond quartet. La diferencia entre ambos grupos está clara pero qué tipo de música podemos encontrar en este proyecto. ¿Vas a grabar algo con este cuarteto o sólo te dedicarás a hacer conciertos?
Hasta el momento sólo ha sido un grupo de directo y no hemos podido grabar nada porque estoy muy ocupado con la gira con Ian. Me encantaría grabar un disco pero no creo que pase pronto. Me encanta componer para el cuarteto y espero poder hacer algo más con mi grupo en 2014.
-Gracias una vez más por tus respuestas. ¿Algún mensaje para tus fans de habla hispana?
Me encanta tocar en España y espero volver pronto. Me encantaría aprender español porque mi hermano y su familia viven en Colombia y siempre me animan a aprender el idioma. Nos vemos en la próxima gira por España.

Scott Hammond (Bristol, 1973), is the current drummer that Ian Anderson is using  in his successful tour Thick As A Brick 1 & 2. Hammond tries to forget the fantastic work that made on the drumsticks Doane Perry, who was in Jethro Tull since 1984, and it is curious he began his foray into the music playing the piano, an instrument he left to play drums in his first band Half Decent . Currently Hammond complements his work in the band of Ian Anderson with his project The Scott Hammond Quartet, with whom he is touring in the UK when his busy schedule permits.

-Thank you so much for answering this interview. After reading your bio at your web page we deduce that you were a kind of piano man　 until being fourteen and then decided to switch to drums. What do you remember about this change and how was it?

Hi, and no problem. I played piano and guitar at around 14 and didn't really know which one was going to be my main instrument until probably my late teens. I don't really play guitar anymore but do have an occasional tinkle on the ivories, just not in public.

-How was your learning with Dave Hassell during that 3 years? Do you think that there you got all the foundations of your actual playing?

Dave was a fantastic teacher and I feel lucky to have learnt so much from him. I still need to practice some of what I learnt from him. I had another great drum teacher in my early days too (Colin Aldridge) who really got me started. A good teacher is worth his/her weight in gold.

-You have been recording with the best artists like Bruce Dickinson, Gilbert O Sullivan, Greg Lake or Justin Hayward. Was all these recordings a dream that came true? What artist was the most impressive for you?

I love working with lots of different people playing lots of different styles of music but lately there has been less time for that as my tour schedule with Ian has been so busy. Bruce Dickinson was a lovely chap and good fun to work with.

-Most of the people around the world know you now for your work with Ian Anderson. When did you get in touch with him and how?

I have known Dave Goodier for a very long time as he's from Bristol, my neck of the woods. He told me about three years ago (2010) that Ian was looking for a drummer so I went to watch Tull's sound check in Bristol's Colston Hall and then had a chat about the dates that were coming up with Ian. I then had an audition of sorts in Sheffield City Hall (UK) during Tull's sound check. I just had to play about four songs I think. I heard from Ian a few days later that I'd got the job. Great news!



-Bands like Deep Purple, among others, are one of your influences but& were you a Jethro Tull fan before joining Ian?

Yes I was, I had three albums. One was Thick As A Brick which I didn't listen to very much ironically, as I'm playing that nearly every night at the moment! My favourite was, and still is, Minstrel in the Gallery.

-Talking with another Ian´s fans we could deduce that for some of them you are a really nice player and for others, like me, maybe the perfect balance between the strength of Barriemore Barlow and the technic of Doane Perry, what do you think about this?

I have huge respect for Barriemore Barlow and Doane Perry. They are both incredible players and very different. I think I am different again but have learnt much from listening to their recordings with Ian. I have stolen from them and will continue to do so :). I tried to keep the essence of Barriemore's playing style while playing TAAB 1 live, but inevitably it will come out in my own style.

-You also recorded TAAB2, being at the studio with Ian must be a quite interesting experience and this record was supposed to be, and it is, one of the most important of his career. Florian told us in a recent interview that Ian oversees the whole song easily in terms of melody and arrangements but you as a drummer maybe can see this from another point of view. What was the most difficult thing to do during this recording and how did you go through it?

There is always a pressure to get the job done quickly and in the time put aside to do it. This pressure gradually eased as we ended up being ahead of schedule. On the whole it was an enjoyable process and I think we were all quite happy with the end result. We worked quite long hours and all got tired. All of us fell asleep on the floor at some point even Ian (not during a song of course!).

-Were you conscious that you were recording such a masterpiece?

I was aware that it was an important album because of the success of TAAB 1, but knew that Ian wasn't trying to do more of the same. The album certainly had it's own thing going on, but with a big nod to TAAB 1.

-Touring is quite important for Ian and the schedule is always plenty. How was it to go from your tours before this and being playing all around the world?

Yes, it has been a huge change in lifestyle. I was doing a lot of local gigs of various kinds and usually traveling no further than a few hours to a gig (or much less) and I had only flown about twice in my life at that time. Then suddenly, I'm jet setting all over the planet and getting the chance to see a lot more of the world. Often we only really see the airport, hotel and venue but we do get the opportunity now and again to explore the city centre of wherever we are. It's great to play with the same guys every night and get to know a set of music really well. We work well together as a team and are very used to each other's playing. It can also be hard being away from the family but fortunately we are rarely away for more than a few weeks at a time.

-The concerts have two parts and during the first your work is kind of exhausting. Ryan told us that is like a 45 minutes whirlwind. How do you prepare yourself for this and what tricks do you use for not losing the concentration? What´s your favorite part of this first half?

I play through the whole show at home before a tour just as a refresher. I don't really have any tricks just try to stay focused. We know it really well now so if anyone makes a mistake we can get back on track very quickly. I don't really have a favourite bit of TAAB 1 but there are lots of bits I enjoy for different reasons. I really like Banker Bets and Kismet in TAAB 2.

-You use to be quite concentrated on your playing but do you feel the roar of the crowd in some parts of the show. Do you think that there´s a difference between the Spanish talking countries and the rest?

I don't hear the crowd as much as people might think because of the in-ear monitors I wear. So please cheer twice as loud in the drum solo thanks! :) Seeing the crowd enjoy themselves certainly makes the band play better. The audiences in South America are certainly the liveliest I have come across and the U.S.A can be quite lively too.

-You ve been playing in Spain in February and the first show at Palau de la música in Barcelona was horrible. Ian has commented that this and Ryan also recognized us that he forgot some verses and that the building wasn´t prepare for rock shows. Do you remember something in particular of this concert? What about the rest of the tour in Spain and Southamerica?

I think that gig was the first one of the tour and we hadn't played together for quite a while so it wasn't the band at it's best perhaps but I think the second gig was great. The sound in Barcelona was a bit tricky too because of the acoustics in the building, although it was a beautiful venue.

-Ian has already commented that he´ll be recording a new prog rock record in November that will be released in 2014. Have you listened something from this stuff? Are you going to be involved in this new record?

I can't comment on that at this stage.

-It seems that Ian will be playing some Jethro Tull´s rare　 songs live by the end of the year. Have you started to rehearse this? What song would you like to play?

Yes we have started to rehearse some of the older songs. I would like to play Songs from the Wood as it's quite interesting for the drums.

-Aside of your work with Ian Anderson you also play with The Scott Hammond quartet. The differences are quite clear but what can we find in your songs. Are you thinking about recording a record with this quartet or just playing live?

We have yet to record anything as I've been to busy with Ian so it has only been a live band up to now. I would love to record an album with it but I can't see that happening anytime soon. I enjoy writing music for the quartet and hope to do more with the band in 2014.

-Thanks once again for answering. Any message for your Spanish talking fans?

I enjoy playing in Spain very much and hope to be back there soon. I would like to learn Spanish as my brother and his family live in Colombia and often encourage me to learn the language.
